European Parliament calls for pan-European fitment of winter tyres

When the European Parliament adopted a report with recommendations on how to improve European road safety between 2011 and 2020 it supported a number of measures includes a Europe-wide obligation for winter tyre fitment on all vehicles.

According to trade bodies NTDA and the Automotive Aftermarket Federation, the report reiterates the commission’s view that there needs to be a coherent approach to road safety and it calls for road safety issues to be addressed in all relevant policy areas, such as education (e.g. driver training, or information regarding the role of tyres and their proper maintenance), health (eye tests) or environmental and social policy.

Quarter profit plummets at Stamford Tyres

Stamford Tyres has reported its unaudited quarter earnings for the period between 1 August and 31 October 2011, a quarter in which its after-tax profit dropped 80.5 per cent. The Singapore-based company’s after-tax profit amounted to S$330,000 (£149,500) in the second quarter of the 2012 financial year, as opposed to $1.69 million a year earlier.

Chipped – Goodyear releases its first RFID tyres

Reduced downtime, improved tyre management and greater security are three of the advantages Goodyear claims the introduction of microchips into its truck tyre range will bring. The tyre maker has released its first product to utilise the technology, the Goodyear Regional RHT II RFID (Radio Frequency Identity) 435/50R19.5 trailer tyre; the microchip built into the tyre helps deliver fleet operators the above benefits through interfacing with FleetOnlineSolutions, Goodyear Dunlop’s internet-based tyre management programme.

We Sell Tyres (Wholesale) MD Jackson retires

After 42 successful years in the tyre industry, Alan Jackson, managing director of Grouptyre member We Sell Tyres (Wholesale), has announced his retirement. Jackson’s successor will be Andy Zelos, who will take over as wholesale director from 1 January, 2012. Zelos has also joined the board of directors at Grouptyre. Jackson and Zelos have worked together for over twenty years, both at WS Tyremasters and subsequently at We Sell Tyres (Wholesale).

No extra charge for winter tyres, confirms insurance association

The Association of British Insurers has issued a statement reassuring motorists that fitting winter tyres shouldn’t result in an extra charge on their motor insurance. ABI member insurers, who represent 90 per cent of the UK motor insurance market, have confirmed they will not charge any additional premium if winter tyres are fitted, provided the tyres meet, and are fitted in accordance with, vehicle manufacturer specifications – and are in a roadworthy condition.

Russian port authorities seize radioactive tyres

Do you feel positively radiant after buying that new set of tyres? That wouldn’t necessarily be a good thing if you bought them out of the container in the Russian port of Vladivostok. Authorities in the port city have confiscated a shipping container sent from Japan; 29 of the tyres within are said to register excessive levels of gamma and beta rays.

Michelin aiming to sell 400,000 motorcycle tyres in Indonesia next year

PT Michelindo Mitra Abadi, distributor of Michelin tyres in Indonesia, has begun selling motorcycle tyres and aims to sell 400,000 units there next year. The Jakarta Globe quotes Michelindo director Jemmy Tantoro as saying “as the third-largest motorcycle market in the world, Indonesia promises a huge market for motorcycle tyres and motorcycle-related products.” This optimistic outlook is supported by the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), which on 29 November reported motorcycle sales in Indonesia could reach 8.4 million units in 2011, a year-on-year increase of 13.5 per cent; on average, sales rose 20 per cent per annum between 2007 and 2010.

Surveys suggest winter tyres a minority plan despite winter mobility needs

A survey by online retailer in the UK mytyres.co.uk, part of Delticom, found that staying mobile in winter was important to an overwhelming majority of motorists (82 per cent). Almost two thirds of respondents rated staying mobile as “very important” or “critically important”, the company says. However, the company contrasts this desire to stay on the roads in winter conditions with the results from another independent survey from vehicle auction company Manheim. According to the results from their survey, only five per cent of motorists are planning to purchase winter tyres this year.

Ford of Britain has joined TyreSafe as part of its UK Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Through its membership, Ford of Britain will support TyreSafe’s campaigns, helping to educate drivers of both car and commercial vehicles about the importance of proper, regular tyre maintenance. It will also provide the group with other valuable insight to help improve road safety.

Tyrecor and Infinity partner for South African golf day

Infinity Tyres’ involvement with tyre industry golfing events continued with its support of the annual St Francis Bay Golf Club fund-raising competition in the Eastern Cape Province. The tyre brand’s support was given in conjunction with its South African partner, Tyrecor. Around 300 players took part at this year’s three-day event. Charl de Villiers, manager of Tyrecor, stated that: “The Eastern Cape is one of our star regions and we have managed to build a tremendous following for the Infinity brand.

TyreSafe Australia granted regional PressurePro distribution

TyreSafe Australia has been awarded Australasian distribution rights for the PressurePro TPMS system. The fleet tyre maintenance specialist says it will target mining, road transport and bus sector customers with the US-developed system. “We are proud to offer product and service for the PressurePro system,” stated TyreSafe Australia’s PressurePro executive David Horne. “They pioneered commercial and aftermarket TPMS in the US and have been global market leaders for the past 20 years.

Avon centenary show bike shod with new 3D Ultra tyres

Motorcycle Live is on at the NEC in Birmingham until 27 November, and amongst the plethora of moto-related sights at the show is Avon Tyres’ one-off show bike, built especially to mark the company’s centenary of motorcycle tyre manufacture. Avon says that the Yamaha YZF-R6, which can be found on the Speedycom stand, has been treated to a list of mouth-watering aftermarket parts including an EK chain and sprocket kit, Mivv exhaust, Pazzo levers, Hel brake lines, R&G Racing tail tidy, flush-fit diamond indicators and integrated rear indicators, Bonamici rear set footpegs, double-bubble screen, carbon fibre rear hugger, front fender and fuel-tank protector. In addition, the bike will provide visitors to the show with a first look at Avon’s new 3D Ultra Supersport tyre, part of a new range to be launched early in 2012.

Rubber 'issue' causes temporary production halt at Dunlop Aircraft Tyres

Birmingham-based Dunlop Aircraft Tyres halted new and retread tyre production during the week commencing 15 November after identifying a “potentially sub-standard rubber” supply. According to the Birmingham Mail, managers at the Castle Bromwich plant suspended manufacturing for three days following a “potential issue” with the raw material.

TyreSafe reports that its membership drive is on a ‘roll’ Bond International, one of the UK’s leading tyre wholesalers, the latest to join up. 2011 has seen a number of public organisations and businesses show their commitment to road safety by becoming TyreSafe members, among them The Association of Chief Fire Officers, the British Horse Society, several vehicle manufacturers, tyre manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers as well as garage equipment suppliers.
