UHP segment sales a highlight for ‘record’ Hankook year

Hankook Tire says its global sales last year reached record levels. The Korean company’s tyre sales in 2011 amounted to KRW 6.484 trillion (£3.7 billion), a 20.9 per cent year-on-year increase. Yet thanks to steep rises in raw material prices this bumper sales year was not accompanied by a corresponding increase in operating profit – in 2011 this reached KRW 566.3 billion (£325.1 million), a decline of 8.8 per cent on the previous year.

Unity tyres building on Mitas relationship

UK agricultural tyre distributor, Unity Tyre says it has placed Czech brand Mitas “at the centre” of its business, having built a close and long-standing relationship with the company. Unity says it is the leading distributor of the brand into the UK, achieved by building upon the ever-increasing OEM demand for Mitas tyres and by stocking a truly in-depth range of tyres to satisfy the replacement market. Unity says it has been highly successful in establishing the Mitas tyre with farmers and agricultural contractors as the tyre of choice for keeping their valuable machines running.

Dmack launches two new WRC tyres at Monte Carlo

Dmack Tyres will introduce two new tyres for its second season in the FIA World Rally Championship at next week’s series opener, Rallye Monte Carlo, which returns to WRC after a few years away. The tyre brand says it will approach the 2012 season “with a sense of optimism and confidence” after Ott Tanak achieved a top-six performance on the series-closing Rally GB using its tyres; Dmack says 2011 was largely “a development year”, and has now developed two new asphalt tyres specifically to cope with the demands of a rally steeped in motorsport heritage.

Continental introduces extra large CV steer, trailer tyres

Continental has added two larger models to its range of premium commercial vehicle tyres with the introduction of new, larger steer and trailer products for volume-optimised transport operators. The HSR2 XL for front steer axle is designed for higher load capacities, while the second is the HTR2 trailer tyre in 55 cross-section for use on high volume vehicles.

Infinity Tyres Foundation donates to Indian High School Fund

The Infinity Tyres Foundation has donated funds to the Indian High School of Dubai (IHS) to “help develop its infrastructures and broaden its programme of scholarships”. The Foundation said the funds were “intended to reinforce our interest in the future leaders of tomorrow and our strong commitment to making a better and fairer society”. Infinity hopes that its donation will allow the school to decrease student fees and award generous scholarships.

Bridgestone MotoGP tyres “too hard” – Capirossi

The new safety advisor to MotoGP and series promoter Dorna, Loris Capirosi has told an Italian motorsport magazine that he has made it his priority to improve the safety of tyres supplied to the series by Bridgestone. The 22 year racing veteran – including 10 years as a MotoGP rider – said that he had met with Bridgestone in Valencia, characterising the encounter as “tough”.

Toyo to exhibit new sports tyres at Brussels

Toyo will exhibit its new Proxes T1 Sport and the Proxes T1 Sport SUV at its stand at the Brussels Motor Show later this month. The tyre manufacturer’s stand will be situated on the patio, and it says visitors will “gain an insight into the main precepts of the Toyo Tires strategy”, through the breadth of products on show. Toyo says it will “aim to confirm the company’s commitment to meeting the needs of today’s drivers: good value for money and a great driving experience.” The 90th Brussels Motor Show opens on 12 January 2012.

Which? rates 69 winter tyres

Consumer advice magazine Which? has completed an extensive winter tyre test in the Alps, taking into account six sizes. Each tyre was given a percentage score and ranked accordingly in its size division. In addition, the magazine presented a star rating out of five in each category it tested, namely: dry braking, dry handling, wet braking, wet handling, braking on snow, traction on snow, cornering on snow, braking on ice, cornering on ice, fuel economy, noise and wear. Rhineland removes non-clean oil tyres from German market

At the end of 2011 Rhineland became the first German federal state (after Baden-Württemberg in 2010) to carry out investigations into the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in motor vehicle tyres. The results were published on 12 December 2011. Two of the 19 tyres tested exceeded the limit and show that extender oils were used which do not meet the EU requirements. The offending types of tyres were reportedly removed from the market as a result of not meeting the legal requirements.

TyreSafe celebrates five years of motorist education

It’s now half a decade since TyreSafe first set out to improve safety on UK roads. The 2006-established organisation is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and upon reaching this milestone can reflect with pride that, during the years it has contributed to public awareness on tyre safety, the number of motorists (as reported by DfT figures) killed or seriously injured in tyre related accidents has dropped 38 per cent.

Tyres & Accessories competition winners announced

The winners have been drawn for the tyrepress.com/Tyres & Accessories magazine competition to win one of three pairs of tickets to the Autosport International show on 14-15 January at Birmingham’s NEC. Pyreco continues £85 million tyre pyrolisis plans

Pyreco, the company behind the proposed Teeside tyre pyrolisis plant, have given a series of presentations to potential suppliers. Richard Tweddle, manager of Pyreco addressed members of the Energy and Environmental Industries Forum this week (12 December), to discuss plans for its planned £85 million pyrolysis plant.

The plant, which will be the first of its kind in Europe will be situated in Wilton on Teesside, and will use specialist technology to deconstruct tyres into their constituent parts, including carbon black, steel, oil and gas.

Fulda unveils EcoControl HP

Fulda has announced the upcoming launch of its new high performance summer tyre, the EcoControl HP. The range will be introduced in time for the 2012 season and be available in 22 dimensions for 15 and 16-inch rim diameters. The tyre maker says the EcoControl HP is designed to take “meet both dry and wet conditions in its stride”; in September-October 2011 the new tyre was extensively tested against three competitor tyres by the independent testing and certification organisation TÜV SÜD Automotive, and was found to be a “well balanced performance tyre.”

Kirkby Tyres to exhibit at LAMMA 2012

Kirkby Tyres has announced that it will have a “major presence” at LAMMA 2012 and will be featuring “many new tyre products and sizes for the tractor, row crop and trailer markets” Kirkby Tyres is the sole UK and Ireland agents for the extensive Alliance range of agricultural and earthmover tyres. The company is also the UK agent for BKT tyres and as such the string of launches and the products on display will be largely drawn from these two manufacturers.

Alliance is set to introduce the Farm PRO 85 and 70 series R-1w tractor radial tyres. With 20 per cent more tread than conventional R-1 tyres and a large foot-print the Farm PRO Traction tyre has an advanced multi–angle lug design with a steep central angle for a smooth ride, long wear and mud clearing properties and a shallow angle at the shoulder for exceptional traction and hillside stability.
