Additional delay for Birla Tyres’ pcr project expected

In its results for the quarter ending 31 March 2012, India’s Kesoram Industries reported pushing back the completion date for its Birla Tyres passenger car radial and truck and bus tyre radial projects, but now the pcr capacity expansion project may face further delays. The IANS news service reports comments made by Birla Tyres CEO Arvind Singh on the sidelines of the company’s Annual General Meeting; Singh told journalists that Birla has “not yet decided” when the passenger car project – which through a Rs 7.5 billion (£87.1 million) investment would have given its Balasore plant a daily pcr capacity of 80 tonnes – will be commissioned. “We are considering the present market conditions,” he said.

Loeb victorious at X Games on Cooper tyres

Cooper Tire describes the X Games Rallycross Final in Los Angeles as the world’s highest profile Rallycross event, and the company was pleased to support the eventual winner, eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb, with its tyres on his successful debut. Loeb was invited to make a one-off rallycross appearance by US regular Travis Pastrana and took a crushing debut victory in front of the American crowd in his Citroën DS3, leading home the Ford Fiestas of Ken Block and Brian Deegan in second and third respectively.

Pirelli supplies tyres to Myerscough motorsport students

Pirelli has provided motorsport students from Myerscough College with competition tyres for the Ford Fiesta R2 rally car they are building as part of their course. Based in Lancashire, northwest England, Myerscough College boasts seven motorsport workshops and several competition cars for the continuing development and expansion of motorsport teaching. The college believes that hands-on experience is an important aspect of learning and therefore encourages students to take part in a wide range of motorsport events throughout the UK.

Anglian Water trials Michelin cold weather tyres

One of the UK’s largest water companies, Anglian Water, will begin a trial of Michelin’s cold weather tyres on its van fleet this winter. The company hopes to find a solution that will ensure its workforce can carry out vital duties safely and reliably in hostile weather. The company looks after more than six million domestic and business customers across the South East, and wants to carry out its operations unaffected by poor weather conditions.

Tyres containing “European rubber” produced

Several tyre makers have expressed their interest utilising natural rubber sourced from guayule and Russian dandelions, but Apollo Vredestein has announced it has actually produced tyres containing such materials. The company says the first tyres manufactured with European natural rubber rolled off its production belt this week.

TyreSafe: Tyre convictions ‘alarmingly high’

The number of motorists driving with defective tyres remains at a “dangerous and worrying level, warns TyreSafe, commenting on figures recently released by the Ministry of Justice. The statistics reveal 9,639 people were convicted of driving with dangerous or defective tyres at Magistrates courts in England and Wales in 2011.

Kumho recognised for CO2 reductions

Kumho Tires has gained “official recognition” for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 13,339 tons over the past five years. In a press statement, the Korean company’s Australian subsidiary reported that Kumho Tires achieved this reduction through upgrading production facilities and adopting renewable energy strategies while at the same time working to develop and manufacture more efficient fuel saving tyres. Kumho’s CO2 reduction plan was launched in 2005 by Kemco (Korea Energy Management Corporation) and was devised in response to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

To demonstrate its various solutions for electric vehicles, Continental has converted a bog-standard Renault Megane to a prototype electric vehicle. Marangoni car tyres unveil new products and first labels

Marangoni Car Tyres, the Marangoni Group business unit that manufactures and sells new tyres, showed a range of the company’s flagship products during the recent Reifen 2012 exhibition. This includes products such as the M-Power, Marangoni high performance orientated product as well as E-Comm and 4Winter Comm tyres, which are described as Marangoni’s summer and winter products for light commercial vehicles. The 4ICE Geco, the newest winter supersoft tyre dedicated to Northern European customers, was also introduced.

Pirelli tyres “work well” in difficult Scottish Rally conditions

Pirelli’s rally tyres were tested by sodden conditions at Saturday’s rain-soaked RSAC Scottish Rally, round five of the MSA Scottish Rally Championship. TyreSafe emphasises need for adequate tread depth in wet

The UK is wet and it doesn’t look like drying any time soon; the country is suffering its wettest second quarter since records began in 1910. TyreSafe has reacted to the weather by publicising the necessity of adequate tyre tread to stay safe on wet roads. “Spring felt more like autumn this year with its unusually high rainfall, yet what it does show is that tyre tread depth should be checked regularly, whatever time of year, to make sure they can cope properly with wet roads,” said Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

Michelin displays new Energy Saver +, truck tyres

Michelin’s stand (3:219) at Reifen 2012 featured current tyres from all product lines, including two world premiere truck tyres and the latest passenger car Energy Saver+. In common with other manufacturers with large hall three stands such as Nokian and GT Radial, Michelin chose to present information about the tyres on touch screens, seeking to engage visitors with interactive technology.
