Point S joins TyreSafe

Leading global independent tyre dealer network Point S has become the latest full member of the tyre safety campaign group TyreSafe. As a member, the network says it will provide its 133 independently owned centres in the UK with tyre safety advice and information, helping them to educate their own customers and improve standards of tyre care. “With so many customer touch points, it’s fantastic to have the support and backing of a network as significant and large as Point S,” comments Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

GiTi debuting six new CV tyres at IAA 2012

With GiTi Tire having launched 12 new tyres in 2012, and with 10 more due before end of the year, the company has announced that it is taking six of its latest truck and bus tyre products to the IAA commercial vehicle show in Hanover. Two of the new GT Radial products – the GAR820 steer axle and GDL617 drive axle patterns – will form the foundation of six product debuts in hall 16, stand A43.

Hankook-sponsored Millen masters Pike Peak in record time

The victor in this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb conquered the 'Race To The Clouds' in record time – and this is good news for Hankook Tire, as the protagonist responsible for this feat was none other than Hankook-sponsored driver Rhys Millen. The New Zealander’s Hyundai Genesis Coupe – fitted with Ventus F200 racing slicks – reached the summit with an overall time of 9:46:164 to claim victory over a field of almost 200 cars and motorcyclists. Millen’s Hyundai is the same car that his professional racer father Rod Millen drove to a world record time in the Time Attack 2WD class at last year's running of the race.

Tyresafe tells paralysed driver’s story in part worn tyre investigation

TyreSafe is carrying out an investigation into part worn tyres available in the UK alongside Auto Express magazine, and the organisation has recently uncovered the story of a driver from Tyne and Wear, who suffered paralysing injuries as a result of his car losing grip when running on recently-purchased part-worns. Keith Johnston, is now permanently paralysed from the top of his chest down, only able to move his arms and neck. He told TyreSafe that he hopes his story will urge other drivers to think twice about which tyres they choose.

Goodyear Dunlop to launch coach-specific tyres at IAA

Amongst the numerous new releases to be unveiled at next month’s IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany will be Goodyear Dunlop’s first dedicated coach tyres. The Goodyear Marathon Coach all-position tyre and Goodyear Ultra Grip Coach winter drive tyre will be on display between 20 and 27 September, and Goodyear Dunlop says it will reveal information at the show “underlining the outstanding wear characteristics and comfort features that coach fleet operators have reported during extended customer testing.”

Tyres drive Continental group margin ‘surprise’

Continental AG may have delivered 948 million euros of adjusted pre-tax profits (EBIT) in the second quarter of 2012, compared with consensus expectations of 865 million euros, but the biggest surprise for analysts was said to have been the group margin figure. At 11.5 per cent this was nearly a percentage point (and therefore on the way to 10 per cent) higher than 10.6 per cent that was expected.

95 per cent of European used tyres recycled

The ETRMA has reported its latest Used Tyre (UT) statistics that show Europe maintained a recovery rate of 95 per cent in 2011, despite an increase of 3 per cent in used tyres arisings compared to 2010. However it is worth pointing out that these figures do not include details for the UK market.

Hankook sales, profits up in second quarter

Hankook Tire reports higher revenues and operating profit for the second quarter of 2012. The Korean tyre maker’s revenues rose 18.5 per cent year-on-year to KRW 1.84 trillion (£1.03 billion) in the three months to 30 June and operating profit jumped 112.1 per cent to KRW 215.5 billion (£121.15 million).

Kirkby goes large with OTR/EM tyres

With a head office and warehouse complex on a six acre site next to John Lennon airport in Liverpool and offices in Scotland, Ireland and China Kirkby Tyres report that the company remains at the forefront of tyre and wheel wholesaling. In addition to holding a range across sectors, Kirkby offers what it calls a “comprehensive stockholding of off-the-road (OTR) tyres and wheels from manufacturers including Alliance, BKT and Double Coin. There is even talk of double-digit growth despite the tough economic environment.

Date set for TyreSafe industry briefing

TyreSafe has announced that its next industry briefing will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 19 September at the Ardencote Manor Hotel in Warwickshire. The organisation will use the occasion to unveil the latest materials and resources available for deployment in October’s Tyre Safety Month and to explain how delegates can get involved with the annual campaign. An update on TyreSafe’s ongoing part worn tyres campaign will also be given during the free event.

Volkswagen up!, Skoda Citigo fit Bridgestone tyres as OE

Volkswagen has selected the Bridgestone Ecopia EP25 tyre as original equipment for the manufacturer’s new up! city car. The A-segment car was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, and Bridgestone started delivery of 165/70R14 81T and 175/65R14 82T size Ecopia EP25 tyres in November 2011. The blue motion version of the up! will be fitted with 175/65R14 82T.

US recall for 841,000 BFGoodrich, Uniroyal tyres

Michelin has instigated a large-scale recall in the US; the tyre maker has announced it is voluntarily recalling approximately 841,000 BFGoodrich and Uniroyal-branded van and light truck tyres sold in the US, Canada and Mexico. The reason given for the recall is that 0.017 per cent of tyres sold have been returned by customers, who have experienced tread loss and/or rapid air loss, resulting from tread belt separation. Michelin says that no deaths or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled tyres.

Magna Tyres in use at Scottish Coal

Following the announcment that Dutch tyre firm Magna Tyres became an official preferred supplier to Terex Cranes in March, the company has continued growing both around the world and closer to home. All cranes produced by Terex at its Zweibücken, Germany and Montceau les Mines, France production lines are now equipped with Magna Tyres as standard.

DriveRight joins TyreSafe

Independent wheel and tyre data provider DriveRight is the latest firm to sign up as a TyreSafe member. Although membership serves as official confirmation of DriveRight’s support, the company has been involved with TyreSafe for some time and supplies the data that goes into the safety association’s tyre pressure app. The app provides users with the correct tyre pressure for their car simply by entering their registration number and is, by the way, is available at the TyreSafe website or via the iTunes store.
