Chinese tyre industry projects new in 2023

In 2023, Chinese tyre companies invested in a number of new projects. Tyrepress China's analysis found that the once popular all-steel radial tyres (generally truck tyre products) have gradually experienced overcapacity, and the new projects increasingly focus on the production capacity of semi-steel radial tyres (car and light truck products). At the same time, Chinese tyre companies pay more attention to overseas projects. In addition, consistent with the trend in 2022, OTR tyres have become an essential focus of the Chinese tyre industry.

Haian Group’s giant tyre product lines in context

Haian Group, a Chinese manufacturer of all-steel giant OTR tyres (engineering tyres with rim diameters of 49 inches and above), has commented on the market situation in response to questions from the stock exchange.

Globally, Michelin, Bridgestone and Goodyear are described as the first echelon of giant OTR products. Chinese tyre manufacturers capable of producing all-steel giant tyres include Haian, Sailun, Xingyuan, Triangle, Zhongce, Aeolus and Doublestar. In early January, Linglong’s Jilin plant had the first 49-inch all-steel OTR tyre, also entering this field.

Linglong produces first 49-inch giant OTR tyre

Witnessed by chairman and president Wang Feng, Linglong’s Jilin Factory has rolled out its first 27.00 R49 giant engineering radial tyre and hence Linglong can now produce larger volumes 49-inch tyres. The tyre manufacturer said that the 49-inch tyre product “further improves the OTR tyre product system and marks that its OTR tyre development has entered a period of rapid development”.

Kirkby returning to LAMMA with 5 agricultural brands

The LAMMA show returns to the NEC on 17 and 18 January, and once again Kirkby Tyres will be there. Occupying the same 225 square metres of exhibition space in Hall 9, the distributor is looking forward to showcasing its main and exclusive agricultural brands, including Alliance, BKT, MRL and Pirelli, and a new introduction to its portfolio – Maxam agricultural radial tyres.

Linglong appoints Jean Paul Spijker director sales and marketing Specialty Tire Europe

Jean Paul Spijker joined Linglong Germany GmbH on 1 December 2023 as director of sales and marketing in the Specialty Tire segment. The Chinese manufacturer said Spijker brings OTR, industrial, construction machinery and agricultural tyre expertise into its burgeoning European organisation. It adds that he is “committed to its ambitious growth plans in Europe.”

Cheng Shin’s revenue in the first 9 months fell

Recently, Cheng Shin Rubber held a third-quarter briefing meeting. As of September 30, 2023, the company can produce 23,000 all-steel radial tyres and 179,000 semi-steel radial tyres per day. From January to September, the tyre manufacturer’s revenue and net profit were approximately NT$73.5 billion (about £1.85 billion; €2.16 billion) and NT$5.6 billion (about £140 million; €160 million).

7 tyre brands honoured at Asia Brand Summit 2023

At the end of September, the list of Asia's most influential brands of 2023 was published at the “Asia Brand Summit” in Hong Kong. A total of 500 brands from 20 countries and regions, were honoured at the 18th World Brand Lab summit themed “The Impact of New Technologies on Brand Transformation and Consumer Behavior.” Seven of them were tyre brands and all seven were ranked amongst the top 350 of the 500 honoured brands.

CITExpo 2023: Recovery and transformation of China’s tyre industry

In early September, the 18th China International Tire Expo (CITExpo 2023) was held in Shanghai. After three years of waiting, this year’s show attracted many dealers from overseas. An exhibitor from Jiangsu General told Tyrepress China: “The results of this year’s China International Tire Expo are quite good. We made appointments with 60 customers before the exhibition. Basically, all of them came. At the same time, we also met many new customers at the exhibition today.” At the popular CITExpo 2023, Tyrepress China noticed that China’s tyre industry is showing two new trends: recovery and transformation.

Tyre test praise for Bridgestone LM005

In its latest joint winter tyre test, motoring association Auto Club Europa (ACE) describes the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 as being “close to the perfect winter tyre,” having displayed “more than rock solid performance” in all test disciplines. The Bridgestone tyre was the only product to gain ACE’s ‘very recommendable’ rating. The association gave a ‘recommendable’ rating to six tyres and ‘conditionally recommendable’ to one product but declared a further two ‘not recommendable’.

Kirkby Tyres gains ISO 14001 certification following focus on sustainability practices

Speke-based tyre wholesaler Kirkby Tyres has gained ISO 14001:2015 certification following its installation of new solar panels, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices. The company says it became the first UK truck and agricultural tyre specialist wholesaler to gain the certification when it was confirmed on 18 August 2023. The company adds that the latest certification is not the first time it has led the way in best practices; in 1993, Kirkby Tyres became the first truck & agricultural tyre wholesaler in the UK to achieve ISO 9001 accreditation. The company said: “we continue to pay consideration to the maintenance and renewal of our operating procedures, standards, and documentation.” Kirkby Tyres celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2022.

The 18th CITExpo officially opens in Shanghai

On 4 September the 18th China International Tire Expo (CITExpo) officially opened in Shanghai. Tyrepress China was present and found that many well-known tyre companies, including ZC Rubber, Sailun, Prinx Chengshan, Guizhou Tyre, Doublestar, and Jiangsu General have all made appearances at this exhibition and brought their flagship products.

NTDA reveals Tyre Industry Awards 2023 finalists

The National Tyre Distributors Association has announced the finalists in the Tyre Industry Awards 2023. The association revealed that it has received a record number of entries for this edition of the UK tyre industry’s premier awards, which will be presented at the NTDA’s 94th Annual Dinner, sponsored by Maritime Cargo Services, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Milton Keynes on Thursday 19 October. The awards ceremony, sponsored by Sailun Tyres, will be hosted by television personality Jon Culshaw, with a capacity audience of 640 guests in attendance.
