Hankook exhibits new tyres at CV Show 2013

Hankook unveiled several new commercial tyres at the CV Show, including the bead to bead retread truck tyre the Alphatread. Additionally Hankook’s latest truck tyres, which aim to fill a gap it identifies between medium and long haul transportation, were displayed, while the brand raised interest in its stand through its sporting sponsorships. Tom May and Phil Dowson, players from Northampton Saints RFC visited the stand, while Hankook also ran a competition to win VIP tickets to football’s Europa League semi-final, a partnership that was announced at last year’s show.

Division and indecision over Pirelli F1 tyres

Pirelli’s decision to make wholesale changes to its range of P Zero Formula One tyres, as well as the sole tyre supplier’s future in the series, are hanging in the balance going into this weekend’s Monaco grand prix. The tyre maker appeared ready to go ahead with a plan to supply altered tyres from June – thought to be a mix between the features of the current rubber and last year’s model – but behind-the-scenes negotiations have followed that announcement.

Conti displays 3G coach tyres, new VanContact tyres at CV Show

Continental has much to talk about having recently begun a series of planned third generation commercial tyre launches with three coach and bus tyres. The third generation is being marked by an increased level of application specialisation in the commercial segment, the details of which can be found on pp. 52-53 of April’s Tyres & Accessories. The Conti Coach, for long distance travel, the Conti CityPlus, for regional, or intercity use, and the Conti Urban, which has been optimised for typical city-based usage. All three tyres are grouped under the more traditionally Conti-style product number, HA3, though increased branding is one of the focal points for Conti’s third generation.

Bridgestone OE run-flats now on par with conventional tyres – test

Run-flat tyres have often been blasted for the inferior comfort they deliver, however a recent European test gives hope that puncture avoidance may no longer equal a harsh ride. German motoring organisation ADAC and Austria’s ÖAMTC put four Bridgestone run-flats to the test, and found one to offer comparable ride comfort and fuel consumption to an equivalent standard tyre.

Study shows soil compaction superiority of IF tyres

A French study has demonstrated the effectiveness of Improved Flexion (IF) tyres at reducing soil compaction compared to a set of caterpillar tread tracks. The study, organised by the French National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture (IRSTEA), measured the soil compaction rates on a 3.5 hectare plot of farmland after a loaded combine harvester fitted with three different mobility options – a set of Michelin CerexBib 800mm IF tyres, a set of CerexBib 900mm IF tyres and a set of three 760mm roller caterpillar tread tracks – passed over it.

Pointons teams with Potteries Tyres for Conti tyre management

Leading UK food waste recycling and animal by-product transporter, John Pointon & Sons has put into place a structured tyre management process. The firm will work closely with Staffordshire tyre supplier, Potteries Tyres of Stoke-on-Trent and Continental Tyres to minimise tyre costs and unplanned downtime, while ensuring the tyres meet the varied demands and working conditions of Pointon’s fleet of 68 trucks and 216 trailers.

Avon becomes Time Attack series tyre partner

Avon Motorsport has taken its place alongside Pirelli as one of two tyre companies sponsoring the Time Attack series in 2013. At the first event of the year at Cadwell Park Avon tyres were used to claim the overall fastest lap, a new Time Attack lap record in qualifying, and second place overall in the intensely close Pro Class final, thanks to the Mitsubishi Evo of Gareth Lloyd. Time Attack organiser, Andy Barnes praised Avon for recognising the potential of the championship, and the good fit with the brand’s products provided by the series.

Kenda launches green tyres

Kenda has launched a new passenger car tyre designed with a strong focus on decreasing fuel consumption. Hosted by Varga Trading Co., Kenda director James Lo unveiled the newly developed eco tyres in a presentation that also showed the new tyre’s low noise pattern design, addressing another EU tyre label category. Other speakers included Dr Hongder Chang, Kenda’s general manager, who outlined the company’s goal of generating sales of US$2 billion, and dealers Mohammad Shahid, from Pakistan and Nassib Daher from Lebanon. The KR 30 is manufactured in Taiwan.

Infinity to exhibit new tyres at Autopromotec

Infinity Tyres has confirmed its participation at this year’s Autopromotec in Bologna, where it plans to stage the official launch of its Ecopioneer, Enviro, and Ecovantage tyres. All three tyres, which have fitments for small city cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles respectively were previewed previously at Pneu Expo in Lyon and Madrid’s Motortec Automechanika Ibérica. They will come to market in summer 2013.

Ecowing 5% more fuel efficient than standard Kumho tyre – test

A fuel economy challenge staged by Kumho Tyres Australia has highlighted the fuel savings its ecowing ES01 can deliver. The company says that during the challenge its rolling resistance optimised tyre delivered a 5.1 per cent advantage in fuel efficiency in comparison with a conventional steel belted Kumho tyre.

ITDG becomes exclusive US Diamondback distributor

The Independent Tire Dealers Group (ITDG) has announced its exclusive distribution and marketing of the Diamondback passenger car and light truck tyre brand in the United States. The buying group said it is working in concert with Husky Tire of San Antonio, Texas, which provides logistical support expertise.

Yokohama to build second truck tyre plant in Thailand

Phase two work on Yokohama Rubber’s truck and bus tyre factory in Thailand is scheduled to begin in July. This second stage of the Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. project involves the erection of a second plant on a 2.6 section of land adjacent to the existing truck and bus tyre factory in Rayong Province. Yokohama Rubber’s total investment in this second plant amounts to 8 billion yen (£53.6 million). The expansion will double the Thailand subsidiary’s truck and bus tyre capacity to 700,000 pieces per annum; the second plant is scheduled to enter production in April 2015 and full-fledged operation the following December.
