Apollo Tyres building UK dealer network at ‘iconic venue’ events

Apollo Vredestein UK managing director Stuart Jackson revealed several strategic details with which Apollo plans to grow its brand in the UK. Apollo is to introduce a truck and bus tyre range and expand its passenger car tyre lines into a fourth generation, with a sizeable investment in UK marketing “to support brand growth.” The tyre manufacturer will also develop its links with Manchester United, both as a partner in a sports facility initiative and as a significant branding opportunity, with video and print marketing materials featuring the purple of Apollo and the red of the Stretford team.

What the rise of BRIC and MINT economies means for the tyre market

OK so the fact that China is the world’s largest tyre producer, the largest car maker, has the largest population and is likely to be the largest economy soon means that it is massively premature to write off the People’s Republic. Rapid growth and the huge scale of Brazil, Russia and India means these markets are still should be the focus of much attention. However, many international businesses have already latched onto this. So if everyone is competing for what they perceive as the same low-hanging fruit other opportunities could be going missing…or at least that is the question that is being raised in banking circles.

Sailun involved in Kings Road Tyres acquisition

Tyre manufacturer Sailun has confirmed to Tyrepress an “indirect interest” in Kings Road Tyres. While the direct players in the investment group have yet to be fully confirmed, Sailun’s indirect interest gives some indication of potential tyre industry figures involved in the partnership, confirmed to involve Chinese, European and North American interests.

TREC: Michelin partners to extract alcohol and rubber from used tyres

Four French companies are partnering in a project to develop further applications for used tyres. Work is being carried out under the TREC project name and Michelin’s leadership; TREC is backed by a €51 million budget that extends over an eight year period and includes €13.3 million that France's Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) is providing to Michelin and one other partner, SDTech, as part of the French government’s “Investing in the Future” programme. The project covers all stages of research and development processes, from the definition of scientific concepts to pilot testing and validation on an industrial demonstrator. Michelin says at least one of the project’s outcomes is expected to tie in with the BioButterfly project that began last year.

Tyresure: TPMS take-up fastest in northern Europe

Retail sales of tyre pressure monitoring system sensors and service kits are growing fastest in northern Europe. According to Ian Smith, managing director of British firm Tyre Sure which supplies Tech Europe’s TPMS needs across the continent, drawing a line from the Nordic region south to Spain and Portugal gives you an ever-decreasing continuum of market demand. As you might expect there is a direct correlation between having a distinct winter market and TPMS success. Those at the South of Europe have comparatively little demand by comparison.

Strategic investment group buys controlling interest in Kings Road Tyres Group

A controlling interest in Kings Road Tyres Group (KRT) has been acquired by a strategic investment group with members in China, Europe and North America. The UK management team, which bought out the company in the second half of 2011, will “continue to retain a significant equity position in the company and will maintain responsibility for day-to-day operation of Group businesses,” said a statement issued to Tyrepress by KRT today. The company said that the deal would “secure significant new equity investment” for KRT, which it said would help it develop its position as one of the leading players in the UK tyre industry.

Sino Legend: ITC decision allows continued US import of tyres with SL-1801 tackifier

No sooner had the US issued a modification to its initial determination in the Sino Legend (Zhangjiagang) Chemical Co., Ltd. and SI Group Inc. intellectual property case (on 16 January) then Sino Legend replied with a statement of its intent to continue with US imports of tyres featuring this product. According to Sino Legend, the commission ruled that the majority of SI Group’s alleged trade secrets are unprotectable and rejected SI’s request to exclude Sino Legend SL-1805 and SL-7015 resins from US import. The ITC is also said to have struck down the originally recommended general exclusion order.

Formula E tyres to feature RFID

Michelin says it is working on a ‘communicating’ tyre for the Spark-Renault SRT_01E car that will be used by all teams during the first year of the new FIA Formula E Championship. The announcement was made during a demonstration run by the electric single-seat race car at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, USA.

Ho-Youl Pae becomes new Hankook COO Europe

Ho-Youl Pae has been announced as the new Hankook chief operating officer in Europe, following former COO, Jin-Wook Choi’s move to a consultancy role within the manufacturer’s global headquarters. FIA homologates Conti speed record

The Federation Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA) Land Speed Records Commission has homologated Continental Tire the Americas’ world speed records for both ten kilometres and ten miles from a standing start. The tyre maker, in conjunction with Michael Shank Racing, Ford, Roush Yates Engines and International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) set out to break the records at Daytona International Speedway on 9 October 2013; the attempt was made by Colin Braun, who drove a Ford EcoBoost-powered Daytona Prototype (DP) fitted with Continental’s ExtremeContact DR (Dry, Race) tyres.
