Michelin to fit tyres to Porsche 919 Hybrid as technical partner

As the technical partner of Porsche’s endurance racing programme, Michelin played its part in the development of the new Porsche 919 Hybrid by designing specially-adapted tyres for the LMP1 class prototype. In compliance with the 2014 sporting regulations for the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) and Le Mans, tyres are size 31/71-18 on both the front and the rear. Developed on a simulator for all of the firm’s LMP1 partners, the Michelin tyres on the Porsche 919 Hybrid were refined during testing sessions conducted jointly between the two firms’ technical teams.

Drivers react to Pirelli 2014 tyres as final testing begins

Entering the final preseason test at Bahrain, commentary from Formula One drivers about the 2014 range of Pirelli tyres has been most noticeable for its comparative scarcity. When drivers have spoken up, their verdicts have been generally indecisive or cautious. Sauber driver Adrian Sutil praised Pirelli’s 2014 Formula One tyres for showing “greater consistency” on the first day of the final test, but has previously been quoted by motorsport news sources bemoaning the tyres’ harder compounds and stiffer constructions.

Conti to launch A-graded ContiEcoPlus HT3 trailer tyre at CV Show

Following last year’s roll out of its third generation coach and bus tyre range, Continental will turn its attention to goods vehicles at the CV Show 2014. Conti plans to showcase the first two products from its goods vehicles range: the ContiEcoPlus and the Conti Hybrid. The manufacturer has begun a new naming system for its TBR tyres, with the nomenclature designed to describe more clearly the application the product is intended for.

Production recommences at fire affected Ceat plant

Ceat Ltd reports that production has resumed at its Bhandup facility following the fire that broke out in the plant’s raw material store on 23 February. Company managing director Anant Goenka shared with India’s Business Standard that the cause of the fire is still unknown, however sabotage has been ruled out.

Yokohama sees demand for SUV and 4×4 tyres rise in the UK

Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama reports that it has seen demand for its range of SUV and 4×4 tyres in the UK increase in recent years. According to the company, this is due in part to increased numbers for so-called soft-roaders but also the increased awareness of the Yokohama range of SUV and 4×4 tyres.

Falken engineers employ Japan’s Earth Simulator in making of new Ecorun PCR tyre

A new energy efficient passenger car tyre has been developed using the world’s highest energy synchrotron radiation facility and ‘Earth Simulator’ supercomputer. Sumitomo Rubber Industries has employed techniques not traditionally used in the tyre industry to develop what it calls a new “4D Nano Design process” to create the Falken Sincera SN832 Ecorun. The manufacturer claims that the technology has allowed it to perform more detailed simulations and analyses, which have in turn allowed it to reduce rolling resistance and braking distances over its predecessor. The tyre is Falken’s first to receive an A-grade for wet grip on the EU tyre label.

“Better weather and more running” for Pirelli F1 tyres in Bahrain

Pirelli is providing a total of 30 sets of tyres for each Formula One team this week, as the second of three pre-season tests gets underway in Bahrain on Wednesday. Warm ambient conditions of around 20 degrees centigrade will provide a marked contrast to the first test of the year in Jerez, which featured low temperatures and rain. Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s Motorsport director said that he expected the test to “allow ourselves and the teams to assimilate more data and knowledge of the tyres.”

The ContiRoadAttack 2 Gran Turismo touring sport tyre has been approved as an original equipment fitment for the BMW R1200 RT, Continental reports. This latest version of the ContiRoadAttack 2 bears the initials ‘GT’ on the tyre’s sidewall and has been optimised for use on heavy weight touring and naked bikes, with a wear-resistant compound and a reinforced casing design that includes a second casing layer for enhanced stability and easier handling.

MAM Software reports that its MAM Autopart Tyres has helped Darcy’s of Durham get its business up and running. With in-built point of sale functionality, Autopart Tyres gives Darcy’s access to extensive features such as labour allocation, parts look up, and technical data. Darcy’s can also keep in touch with its customers by SMS and email, which reduces the cost of postage and paper. The cloud-hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) approach allows the company to spread server license fees through monthly payments.

Report: Passenger car tyres dominate Iran with 70% market share

According to the recently published report by TechSci Research “Iran Tyre Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2018”, the tyre industry in Iran is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 7 per cent during 2013-18, in revenue terms, as a result of continuous increase in tyre demand from OEMs and replacement market. One of the major reasons for growing OEM demand can be attributed to the fact that more than 50 per cent of the total fleet of automobiles in Iran is over 25 years of age. Furthermore passenger car tyre sales are already dominant in Iran, with a market share estimated at 70 per cent.

Goodyear tyres OE on Chrysler 200

Chrysler has approved Goodyear’s Assurance Fuel Max in size 215/55R17 as standard equipment for certain models in its upcoming 200 range, which goes on sale in North America during the second quarter of 2014. In announcing this latest original equipment deal, Goodyear Tire & Rubber notes that its tyres are on more new vehicles in North America than any other brand.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres launches new radial products at Singapore

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres will exhibit its new radial tyres for regional aircraft including the Embraer E-Jet and ATR72 at the Singapore Airshow next week. The company says its products have become more popular with aircraft operators throughout Asia Pacific since it opened a new tyre distribution and retreading facility in China at the end of 2009. It is now looking to increase its market share with new radial tyres that are a lighter weight and that can offer operators improved landing life.

Russia/CIS, taxes weigh upon Nokian Tyres in Q4 2013

Recent tax reassessments have given the Nokian Tyres Group a negative bottom line in the fourth quarter of 2013. The Finnish tyre maker’s pre-tax profit of €57.7 million (already down 44.6 per cent year-on-year) was dragged down to €-36.4 million by the additional €100.3 million in taxes and interest that Finland’s Tax Administration requires Nokian to pay for the 2007 to 2010 financial years.
