Citexpo 2014 reports record figures

Following the conclusion of Citexpo 2014 on 11 September, all initial figures point to the event being the most successful in the international tyre show's history...by some way. Indeed, with this year's unaudited visitor total said to have been around the 11,000 mark, the 2014 show could have grown by as much as 50 per cent since the last event, which attracted just over 7,000 visitors.

Pirelli F1 tyres at 362.1km/h top speed

Pirelli has shown the effect of the most extreme speed to be clocked during the 2014 season on its Formula One tyres. At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo reached 362.1km/h while slipstreaming on the main straight. At that speed, Ricciardo’s wheel was rotating around 2,800 times every minute, or just under 50 times every second.

Protyre Motorsport becomes Michelin Formula E global tyre supply partner

Michelin has named Protyre Motorsport as its global tyre supply partner in the inaugural FIA Formula E championship. The Winchester based firm will supply and service the Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyre, which has been specially developed for the series. Protyre experts will co-ordinate logistics and trackside assistance to all teams over the 10 rounds of the innovative series.

Apollo Tyres launches Manchester United ‘Apollo Challenges’ competition

The word to Louis van Gaal is that Manchester United must finish ‘no lower than third’ in the Premier League this year, and should the recently-appointed manager meet this expectation it will be a marked turnaround of last season’s fortunes. Sponsors, such as tyre makers Federal, Multistrada and Apollo Tyres – the latter official partner for the club in 69 countries – also stand to benefit from a better year on-field.

Nokian Tyres launches marketing co-operation with the IOF, Tough Mudder

While many of its tyre industry compatriots favour sponsoring football clubs or championships, Nokian Tyres has set its bearings for involvement in two very different and demanding outdoor pastimes. The Finnish firm says it has signed a three-year co-operation contract with the International Orienteering Federation, and through this expects to gain “strong visibility” in the annual Orienteering World Championships and at World Cup events. Nokian Tyres will also act as title sponsor for the World Orienteering Championships in 2016 and 2017. Under a separate deal, the tyre maker is working with endurance event organiser Tough Mudder in the Central Europe region.

Camping and Caravanning Club hitches up to TyreSafe

TyreSafe has welcomed The Camping and Caravanning Club as the latest organisation to become a supporter of its road safety campaigning activities.

As the world’s oldest club for lovers of camping and caravan getaways, The Camping and Caravanning Club represents the interests of more than half a million members. As such, its involvement in TyreSafe campaigns is set to raise awareness about the importance of correctly maintained tyres among the UK’s 650,000 caravan and motorhome owners.

ATE starts second season as Wolfsburg Sponsor

Apollo Tyres recently signed up as a sponsor to German football club VfL Wolfsburg, and Continental is also back with the team for a second year – the German tyre and automotive component manufacturer’s ATE aftermarket equipment brand will continue as a premium sponsor of the Bundesliga club for the 2014-2015 season. The ATE sponsorship is in keeping with Continental’s sponsorship strategy and involves displaying the brand logo on stadium LED perimeter boards during all VfL Wolfsburg Bundesliga games.

Reifen 2016 at record registration levels

The time since Reifen 2014 can still be measured in weeks, but even now, Messe Essen reports that it has already firmly rented out around 60 per cent of the area in 2014 for Reifen 2016 on 24–27 May, 2016. The more than 150 exhibitors which have already registered include the following manufacturers (amongst others): Alligator, Giti Tire, Kraiburg, Kumho Tyre, Infinity Tyres, Marangoni, VMI and Yokohama. Moreover, the trading companies Bohnenkamp and Reiff have confirmed their participation in the world’s leading trade fair for the tyre sector.

CITExpo aims to break records with its 12th edition

When the 12th edition of China International Tire Expo (CITExpo) opens its doors at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center between 10 and 12 September 2014 it is set to be the biggest in the event’s history. According to the Organizer, Reliable International Exhibition Services Co., Ltd., the addition of a new hall – hall D – as well as the fast take up of space in halls 1-3 has made the difference this year.

Man Utd association leading to Russian gains, claims Federal Tyres

Following the unveiling of Federal Tyres’ latest marketing activity with Manchester United in Russia, Tyrepress got in touch with marketing manager Geoffrey Chang to ask a bit more about the attraction of the club and the English Premier League for a brand trying to make waves in Russia. Federal became the club’s Official Tyre Partner in the Russian and Taiwanese markets at the beginning of last season. While things haven’t gone entirely to plan on the pitch for any of the three men placed in charge of the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure – most recently Louis van Gaal’s home defeat to Swansea – and doubts have been raised about Manchester United’s value as a brand partner (especially given its multiple tyre partners), Federal remains ebullient about the deal.

Police recommend ‘20p test’ following balding tyre crash

The Police have issued a reminder for motorists to check tyre tread depth following an accident that occurred yesterday morning. Via its Twitter account, Avon and Somerset Constabulary advised drivers to gauge tread depth legality using the tried and true method of inserting a 20p coin into the tread grooves: “If the outer band is visible anywhere in the tread the tyre may be illegal and you should get it checked.”

First-half 2014 results a record for Yokohama Rubber

Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. reports that its net sales, operating income and net income reached record first-half highs in the first half of the 2014 financial year. Net income climbed 38.4 per cent over the same period of the previous year to 18.0 billion yen (£104.9 million), on a 23.8 per cent increase in operating income to 23.6 billion yen (£137.6 million), and a 5.3 per cent increase in net sales to 283.9 billion yen (£1.7 billion). Underlying this performance was a strong sales growth in the company’s tyre business, both in Japan and internationally, along with gains in a number of other business areas. Earnings in each segment benefited additionally from a downward trend in raw material prices and from the weakening of the yen.

National Tyres and Autocare is not associated with National Tyres Network

National Tyres and Autocare has issued a statement clarifying that it is not associated with another business operating in the market called “National Tyres Network”. Writing in a statement issued 8 August, the company said: “Axle Group Holdings Limited (which owns National Tyres and Autocare and sister company Viking Wholesale Tyres) works closely with a network of over 3000 independent garages throughout the UK and believe raising awareness of this issue is in the interests of both the industry and our network. Any approach from National Tyres Network Limited is not in any way associated with National Tyre Service Limited or National Tyres and Autocare.”
