Design chosen for Continental’s new headquarters

Continental has selected an architectural partner for the construction of its new corporate headquarters in Hannover, Germany. The tyre and technology company will work with Munich-based firm Henn GmbH. A panel of ten judges selected Henn from a shortlist of three finalists.

The new MobileMech brand is part of the Delticom Group and the vehicle can accommodate a large quantity of tyres, wheels and (in due course) additional equipment and tools to every tyre breakdown or wheel change whether it is at the roadside, office or home.

Unexploded WW2 bombs prompt evacuation of Continental tyre plant

A Continental tyre factory in Hannover, Germany was evacuated yesterday as part of a planned action to defuse and remove a number unexploded bombs dating from the Second World War. The plant, adjacent to the company’s current headquarters, was closed along with hospitals and nursing homes in the area. Some 50,000 local residents were required to leave their homes.

Arthur Gregg new Bandvulc MD

Bandvulc managing director Patrick O’Connell, who started in the family tyre retreading business by working on the factory floor in his school holidays, stepped down as MD of the Bandvulc group of companies on 1 May 2017. According to the company, he will now “spend more time on other projects within Continental”, Bandvulc’s owner since the tyre giant purchased the retreader and fleet business last July.

Three designs being considered for new Continental HQ

Continental intends for its new corporate headquarters building in Germany to be finished in time for the company’s 150th anniversary in 2021, and while the tyre and automotive technology company hasn’t yet decided upon a design for the facility, it has at least narrowed the options down to three. Yesterday, Continental awarded prizes to three of the 13 submitted designs. A judging panel made up of representatives from Continental, the city of Hannover and its council, and other experts awarded the three designs first prize with equal ranking.

Mortimer appointed Continental’s UK passenger marketing director

Guy Frobisher is taking on a central role at Continental AG’s headquarters in Germany as head of marketing communication for the PLT Replacement EMEA business unit, and the UK-based position he leaves is being filled by Tracey Mortimer. Mortimer, who has been with Continental for 14 years, begins in her new job as passenger marketing director on 1 May.

Giti Tire renews official tyre partnership, adds racing car to Fun Cup UK

Giti Tire rides again with Fun Cup UK, having returned as official tyre partner for its second consecutive season. New for the 2017 season, the tyre manufacturer has taken its place on the grid too with a fully liveried GT Radial racing car. The company said the extension of its partnership with the series is part of its growing involvement in European motorsport. The car will be used to raise consumer awareness of the brand while supporting a number of marketing activities throughout the GT Radial Performance Centre (GTPC) network alongside exclusive UK distributor, Micheldever Tyre Services.

SRI team commended for ‘4D Nano’ research

Researchers from Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) and two Japanese universities have received an award from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Science and Technology (Development Category) award was bestowed upon the five researchers during the 2017 Commendations for Science and Technology and was given for their contribution towards tyre development through the coordinated utilisation of advanced technologies.

Renault and partners, including Michelin, introduce fuel-saving concept truck

Renault Trucks has introduced Urban Lab 2 – its distribution concept vehicle – at this year’s Pollutec at Lyon’s Eurexpo exhibition centre until December 2 2016. Developed with six partners under the collaborative Efficient Distribution Truck (EDIT) project, the vehicle combines innovative technology in aerodynamics, hybridisation of the engine, tyres and vehicle-infrastructure communication to achieve potential fuel savings of up to 13 per cent. Having partnered Renault on its Optifuel Lab 1 and 2 projects, Michelin is developing energy-saving tyres.

New head of key account management B2B at Delticom

Delticom reports that Nathalie Kronenberg is now in charge of key account management for the company’s B2B activities. Kronenberg is based at the online specialist’s headquarters in Hannover, Germany and has led the strategic development of B2B key accounts around the world since January. In addition to building up this business within Europe, Kronenberg’s tasks also include expansion to America and the Asia/Pacific region, as well as further promoting the digitisation of the company’s bulk business.

Continental and Bandvulc management comment on integration process

It is no secret that Continental and Bandvulc have been working together for decades. So it was also no surprise to learn that the subject of a possible takeover arose as long as 12 years ago. However, the round of talks that resulted in the sale agreement were instigated by Bandvulc managing director Patrick O’Connell during a meeting at the CV show in 2013. In the two or so years that followed the two firms say they grew together before a final deal was completed in July 2016.

Falken tyre compound technology wins Tire Technology of the Year Award

Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ global brand Falken has won the Tire Technology of the Year Award at the annual awards for innovation and excellence. An independent panel of 27 international tyre industry experts presented the brand’s Advanced 4D Nano Design technology, the latest development of the pioneering work debuted by SRI in 2014, with the accolade on 15 February 2017 at the Tire Technology Expo in Hannover, Germany.

Giti Tire bringing its flagship car tyre brand to Europe

The company supplying as many as a fifth of all car tyres fitted to new vehicles manufactured and sold in China is preparing for the European launch of its flagship brand, and has its sights on both the original equipment and replacement markets in our region. With its new, designed-for-Europe Giti range, Giti Tire aims to become “an established original equipment supplier and recognised technology partner in Europe.” Three product lines will be introduced into a key initial market in the coming months ahead of a wider European rollout.
