Winter tyres the safest option, even without snow and ice – TyreSafe

The winter has been fairly mild so far, but this is no reason for complacency when it comes to driving and your car’s tyres. TyreSafe reminds motorists that winter tyres can help them stay safe and mobile on the road, even if we don’t receive a white Christmas this year. The safety organisation recommends a separate set of winter tyres as the safest choice for British motorists, but says all-season tyres also provide an acceptable balance between summer and winter tyre performance.

On the buses – Hankook wins second award for Blue Bird supply

It’s now two years since Hankook Tire began supplying AH12 steer and Z35A drive axle tyres to bus manufacturer Blue Bird Corporation for original equipment fitment on its school buses, and the US-based company has recognised Hankook’s efforts by bestowing it one of ten 2014 Outstanding Supplier Awards; Hankook award success was in the Polymer category. This is the second year in a row Hankook has received the award; the tyre maker says its back to back wins underscore the commitment shown in its original equipment activities with Blue Bird Corporation.

Motoring association NAF tests Nordic winter tyres

The Norwegian motoring association NAF (Norges Automobil-Forbund) has conducted a test of Nordic market winter tyres. The products coming under the NAF microscope typically differ from cold weather tyres sold in the UK and Western Europe in terms of compound – a softer compound is used for Nordic winter tyres – and more than half also featured studs.

Football & tyres: Linglong Tire partnering with VfL Wolfsburg

As of 1 January 2015, Shandong Linglong Tire will become an international partner to German Bundesliga and Europa League football club VfL Wolfsburg. The multi-year deal sees the tyre maker become a sponsorship partner to the Wolfsburg men’s team in markets outside of Germany. The partnership includes a commitment with Wolfsburg United, the international sporting project from VfL Wolfsburg, and will subsequently support respective Unicef projects and the VfL football school.

Tyres & Basketball: Continental’s latest sponsorship engagement

A new multi-year deal signed by Continental in the US will give it a brand presence at a total of 381 college basketball games per season. Continental Tire the Americas has entered into a partnership with International Management Group (IMG) property schools and Learfield property schools, and becomes the ‘Official Partner of Basketball’ for schools in six high-profile conferences. The tyre maker will be visible both courtside and during televised games.

Continental producing first Taraxagum-based test tyres

Continental has produced a limited number of Russian dandelion rubber-based tyres for product development and testing purposes. The first products featuring the new natural rubber alternative will be winter tyres. Speaking at a press conference in London on Friday 5 December, David O’Donnell, senior vice president research and development for Continental’s tyre division, shared a number details relating to both the natural rubber replacement material and the tyre production strategy related to it.

F1 teams put Pirelli’s 2015 tyres through their paces

The tyres Pirelli will supply to Formula One teams in 2015 were given their first official airing at the final in-season F1 test of the year, which was held straight after the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Although there were no dedicated Pirelli test days and each team concentrated on its own independent programme, all teams tested the new tyres during the two-day test period, having each received ten sets of the new 2015 tyres in place of the existing 2014 allocation. Pirelli, which brought its definitive specification medium, soft and supersoft 2015 tyres to Abu Dhabi, views the new rubber as an evolution of the existing tyre rather than a new departure.

Michelin becomes ‘sole supplier’ to footwear market

Michelin will markedly increase its activities in the footwear sector following the signing of an agreement with Chinese textile firm the Jihua Group on 26 November. The alliance created by the deal signed at the French tyre maker’s Clermont-Ferrand headquarters aims, in Michelin’s words, to “grab a major share of the world high-performance soles and technical footwear market.”

New Continental facility meeting growing Indian demand for premium tyres

With the promise of “German engineering and technology”, adapted for local market performance requirements, Continental has launched two premium passenger car tyre lines in the Indian market. The ContiMaxContact MC5 and ContiComfortContact CC5 are being produced at a new, state-of-the-art passenger car and light truck tyre facility at the company’s Modipuram plant. The newly-built facility has an initial capacity of 800,000 tyres per annum, with potential for further expansion.
