Continental implementing second ContiLifeCycle project phase

Retreading capacity at Continental’s Hannover-Stöcken site, located near the German tyre maker’s headquarters, has grown faster than many anticipated. Speaking with Tyres & Accessories, the director in charge of Continental’s Retread Business shares that the second expansion phase that began late last year will be ready during the course of 2015. And Christian Sass points out that while this second round of work will exclusively focus on furthering Continental’s mould cure retreading capacity, this doesn’t in any way mean pre-cure retreading and the company’s ContiTread partners are not being looked after.

Campervan tyres put through their paces in Promobil tyre test

Promobil, a German magazine focusing on camping vehicles and accessories, has tested five size 235/65 R16 C/CP summer tyres. Various wet and dry tests were carried out at Continental’s Contidrom test facility in Germany. Promobil voted the Pirelli Carrier Camper the winner, however Continental’s Van-Contact 200 also received a “highly recommended” rating.

CAM to host second UniSerV User Group meeting before April’s CV Show

Apollo Tyres launches 2015 Hungary recruitment drive for ‘100s of technicians’

Apollo Tyres has announced details of its recruitment drive in Hungary for its soon to be built Greenfield facility at Gyöngyöshalász. Apollo plans to appoint 100 technicians and fresh graduate engineers soon, with a second drive to recruit a further 150 people in the second half of 2015. Although production will only start at the beginning of 2017, the first batch of employees for the Hungarian factory will be contracted in the beginning of July 2015. Besides technicians and engineers, the company is also seeking applications for various functional areas including administration and logistics.

TyreSafe to increase tyre safety awareness with new member Foxy Lady

Foxy Lady Drivers Club has become the latest motor group to join tyre safety organisation, TyreSafe. Having previously supported TyreSafe’s campaigns informally, members of the UK’s only everyday motoring club for women will now have access to a wealth of tyre safety resources and information designed to help keep them safe on the road. TyreSafe will also be able to access the club’s membership, providing valuable insight and feedback to help the development of its campaigns which aim to raise awareness about the dangers associated with illegal and defective tyres.

Hankook tyres OE on Ford Mustang

There’s an all-new Ford Mustang, and Michelin has already reported that it is supplying tyres to certain models, specifically the Shelby GT350R Mustang and the Shelby GT350 Mustang. Hankook Tire will also provide tyres to the 2015 version of the ‘pony car’. The company says it has been selected as an original equipment supplier for the Ford Mustang V6 and EcoBoost. Both the V6 and EcoBoost base level vehicles will be factory equipped with Hankook Tire’s Ventus S1 noble2 (Pattern Code: H452) all-season tyre in size 235/55R17H.

Lincolnshire dealer convicted for supplying unsafe part worn tyres

Lincolnshire part worn tyre retailer Luke McKenzie faces up to 12 months in prison along with a £20,000 fine after being found guilty of supplying unsafe part worn tyres to the public. The jury at Lincoln Crown Court unanimously found defendant Luke McKenzie, trading as Moss Tyres in Grantham, guilty on 16 accounts of being in possession to supply dangerous products, namely unsafe part worn tyres, to consumers after one hour’s deliberation. McKenzie also pleaded guilty on two other accounts – one account of supplying a spare tyre of the incorrect size during a Trading Standards test purchase operation; and one account of providing false information stating that that tyres fitted by the business had been balanced when they had not.

TIA supports free market tyre recovery over producer responsibility

The Tire Industry Association (TIA) has issued a position statement on scrap tyre recovery, in which the association comes out in support of free market approaches over and above producer responsibility schemes.

The statement, which was developed by the association’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), says “the association promotes and supports a competitive, market-based system to manage the flow of scrap tyres and scrap tyre materials” and points to the success already achieved with this approach – notably a purported tyre recovery rate approaching 90 per cent.
