Nokian Tyres’ tax ruling overturned

In December 2013 and January 2014, Finland’s Tax Administration ordered Nokian Tyres plc to pay additional taxes totalling €100.3 million following a reassessment of the 2007 to 2010 tax years. The tyre maker appealed this decision and now reports that The Board of Adjustment within Finland’s Large Taxpayers’ Office has annulled the reassessment decision and returned the matter back to the Tax Administration for reprocessing.

Rubber and metal – Vianor changes tyres with Hammerfall

In Nokian Tyres’ opinion, advertising within the tyre industry is often boring, and they may have a point. So the company decided to do something about this by arranging and filming a surprise for customers at one of its Vianor retail centres in Gothenburg, Sweden. Unsuspecting motorists arriving for tyre changes were treated to a ‘personal gig’ from Swedish heavy metal band Hammerfall, and the YouTube video of the event has been viewed almost 700,000 times within three days.

Tuning in to RFID – ‘Chipping’ retreaded tyres saves time & adds value, says Roline

Innovative practices aren’t only found amongst the big players in the retreading industry. One small Dutch firm has invested in a better way of keeping tabs on the tyres it retreads, and aims to extend this to the fleets it works with. Likely 1st outing for Pirelli F1 Cinturato wet tyres in Malaysia

While the abrasive Sepang surface has led to Pirelli supplying its two hardest compounds – the P Zero White medium and Orange hard slicks – to Formula One’s second grand prix of the season, the likelihood of intense rain means the 2015 Cinturato wet tyres could see competitive action in Malaysia. If the slick tyres do see use, Pirelli once again anticipates lap times around two seconds quicker than in 2015, which will “exponentially increase the workload on the tyres,” explains Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director.

Starting with the first life – Obo Tyres finds a new solution to the casing shortage

Should Europe’s retreaders play a word association game, most if not all would pair the word ‘casing’ together with ‘shortage’. The dearth of retreadable casings in certain sizes has been an issue for a number of years now, and as yet no end to the situation is in sight. Retreaders not content with idly sitting by and waiting for suitable casings to come their way have needed to be creative and find alternative ways of sourcing them. Obo Tyres is doing just that; the Netherlands-based company has decided to break its reliance upon the open used casing market by entering into a new business area, and recently spoke with Tyres & Accessories about its plans to ensure the ongoing prosperity and growth of its retreading operation.

Conti EcoPlus HD3 – Continental’s first low-profile drive tyre

One challenge for UK-based transport companies crossing the Channel is ensuring vehicles comply with the permitted overall four metre height limit. Continental aims to address this with its new Conti EcoPlus HD3, its first drive axle tyre developed exclusively for low-liners. This 315/45 R22.5 tyre is designed for the requirements of the volume transport segment, and despite its low diameter is suitable for axle loads of 11.6 tons in twin fitment. The tyre maker says its new low profile tyre is the lowest in its class and enables the best use to be made of a trailer’s three metre internal load height without exceeding the European maximum permitted total height.
