Apollo Tyres to further raise TBR tyre capacity in Chennai

Only quite recently Apollo Tyres Ltd gave word that truck and bus tyre production capacity at its factory Chennai, India would increase from 6,000 to around 9,000 tyres per day, yet the company has now announced a further truck and bus tyre capacity boost for the plant. A filing submitted to the BSE following a meeting of Apollo’s Board of Directors on 11 August shares the tyre maker’s plan of outlaying a capital expenditure of Rs 12 billion (£118.7 million) to further expand truck and bus radial capacity in Chennai from the currently planned 8,900 tyres per day to 12,000 tyres per day.

Moto3 graduates achieving Moto2 success on Dunlop tyres

Brno will host the Czech Republic round of the FIM Moto Championship following the USA Grand Prix, and Moto2 and 3 tyre supplier Dunlop is anticipating further success for the newest riders in the more senior series. Alex Rins became the second Moto3 graduate to win a Moto2 race last weekend, while the first, Jonas Folger, won two previous races and will have high hopes for a good result at the Brno circuit where he won his only Moto3 race in 2012. There are now four riders who have appeared on both Moto3 and Moto2 podiums: Rins, Folger, Cortese and Salom.

Russia continues to pound Nokian Tyres’ sales and profits

It is hard to believe that little more than two years have passed since Nokian Tyres predicted the market for premium tyres in Russia would grow by an average of ten per cent each year, and even harder to grasp that as recently as 2012 the Russian and CIS markets accounted for 35 per cent of the tyre maker’s total net sales.

Nokian Tyres to lower production, lay off workers in Finland

The the economic situation in Russia and the CIS countries has led to a downgrade in Nokian Tyres’ 2015 outlook. The Finnish tyre maker says sales of passenger car tyres have continued to decline in this region, and those tyres being purchased within the Russian market are increasingly lower B or C segment brand products. The company’s own sales in Russia were down 39.1 per cent year-on-year during the first half of 2015.

Michelin acquires second German wholesaler

Last year Michelin made news when it bought out the parent company of Germany’s largest wholesaler, Ihle Baden-Baden AG, and now the French tyre maker has increased its wholesale presence in Germany with the 100 per cent acquisition of Meyer Lissendorf, a wholesaler with a strong car tyre focus. Michelin has not disclosed the purchase price.

Fontanesi claims record fourth consecutive World Motocross title

Dunlop riders claimed wins and podiums across the board at the FIM Motocross World Championship Czech Republic grand prix, with Italy’s Kiara Fontanesi claiming the Women’s title on her Yamaha. Dunlop’s Geomax MX32 medium terrain tyres helped the Dunlop riders with five finishing in the MXGP top-ten.

New Horbury base signals growth for Landsail key dealer Twitch Hill Tyres

Fledgling tyre dealership Twitch Hill Tyres has reported significant benefits after signing up as a Landsail Tyres key dealer. Though only established in 2013, the centre has set its sights on becoming “the number one fast fit centre in the area.” Its ambitious plans commenced with a move from Ossett to Horbury in West Yorkshire.

European two-wheel tyre sales down 3% in second quarter

Following on from the publication of European tyre sales figures relating to car, truck and agricultural products sold in the first half of 2015, European tyre association ETRMA has also release two-wheel tyre demand data. In short, the performance of the two-wheel sector appears to be somewhere between the relative success of car and truck tyres, but not as bad as the declining agricultural tyre figures of the first report.

Tyresafe’s growing membership and growing influence

Owing to the fact that TyreSafe now has over 100 active members (many of which are large and/or influential businesses in their respective areas), the organisation is better placed than ever to effect change and there certainly seems to have been progress towards the association’s goal of changing hearts and minds in relation to tyres. Economies of scale – VMI aims to make retreading pay with new Retrax programme

Retreaders in the developed European and North American markets often perform a balancing act – production levels must be high enough to ensure acceptable profits, but at the same time logistics need to remain manageable. The greater the distance between a retreader and its customer base, the more demanding and expensive the delivery of casings and finished tyres becomes. And while retreaders in non-mature markets face other issues, these must also be kept in check in order for retreading to be worthwhile. VMI, a market leader in the development, manufacture and supply of production machinery for the tyre and retreading industries, wants to tip the balance in favour of retreaders both here and around the world. This summer it is introducing a new product programme that may just do that.
