Premium tyres fight back, yet margins remain headache in e-commerce era

An influx of new vehicle registrations has driven demand for premium car tyres upwards in the UK. Yet somewhat paradoxically, the price of these products has continued to fall, further impacting the margin retailers can make versus what they can expect on lower-priced products. Tyres & Accessories sat down with Micheldever wholesale director Alan Baldwin and wholesale marketing manager Rory Carlin to discuss the premium fightback and its symptoms for dealers. “Premium brands are absolutely in the ascendancy,” Baldwin says.

Micheldever Tyre Services has launched 4site4x4tyres.co.uk – a new website designed to help the firm’s customers sell more 4×4 tyres as well as provide expert advice and guidance to 4×4 and SUV owners. The site follows in the footsteps of Micheldever’s successful TyreClick venture, which in many ways is the passenger car orientated equivalent. However, company representatives told Tyres & Accessories that the 4×4/SUV tyre sector demanded a greater emphasis on quality impartial technical advice.

New US plant to meet growing demand for Continental truck and bus tyres

Continental has confirmed its intention to erect a new commercial vehicle tyre factory in the USA, and while no start of construction date has been announced the company says it expects to break ground in the next few months “in cadence with market demands.” The tyre maker anticipates that in the long-term an investment of approximately US$1.4 billion will go into the project.

Bridgestone gains John Deere partner-level supplier recognition

Bridgestone Americas shares that it has been designated a Partner-level supplier for 2015 in the John Deere & Company Achieving Excellence Program. Partner-level status is Deere & Company’s highest supplier rating, and Bridgestone states for this selection recognises its dedication to providing products and service of outstanding quality, as well as its commitment to continuous improvement. Bridgestone says its employees accepted the recognition at a ceremony held in the USA recently.

TVS Srichakra launching radial motorcycle tyres

TVS Srichakra Limited is set to launch a radial motorcycle tyre range in April. Speaking to the local The Hindu newspaper, company director P. Vijayaraghavan said the new range would “initially cater to the needs of the expanding high-end motorcycles market”.

TVS Srichakra, part of the Chennai-based US$8 billion TVS Group, recently launched tractor rear radial tyres in Europe.

Kings Road Tyres restructuring wholesale business

Kings Road Tyres (KRT), one of the longest-established UK tyre wholesalers, is restructuring its distribution network and has committed to a multi-million pound investment and modernisation programme to achieve this.

However, this also means the eight existing KRT warehouses in the UK and Ireland will be progressively closed to coincide with the opening of new premises. This is expected to take place between the end of March and the end of August 2016.

Expecting a baby? Add tyre checks to your to-do list, urges TyreSafe

Of the 700,000 or so babies that will make their first journey home from hospital this year, more than a quarter may do so in a car that drives on illegal or dangerous tyres. TyreSafe bases this statistic on the results of a survey of more than 100,000 tyres it conducted together with Highways England, and with the implications of this in mind has launched a new awareness campaign aimed at pregnant women. The safety organisation is encouraging mums-to-be to add CHECK TYRES to their pre-birth checklist in anticipation of the most important journey they will ever make – the trips to and from hospital, before and after the arrival of their baby.

Zenises begins distribution Triangle truck tyres in Germany

Zenises CEO Harjeev Kandhari has confirmed that the company began distributing Triangle truck and bus tyres in Germany at the start of 2016. The company’s general manager for Central Europe, Stephan Nungess, has been tasked with developing Triangle’s presence in the German market. The goal is to establish Triangle in key distribution channels, with company representatives having already held training sessions with our customers and launched new brochures.

Regular tyre checks could save tens of millions of pounds – TyreSafe

TyreSafe-compiled research frequently shows the human impact of tyre-related incidents in support of its arguments for motorists to increase tyre checks, but the latest infographic from the organisation also counts the economic cost. The estimated cost of tyre-related incidents to the economy over the last five reported years is £416 million, averaging £83.2 million annually, according to Department for Transport figures to 2014.

Michelin CargoXBib Heavy Duty tyres original equipment on Stewart Trailers

Stewart Trailers has specified Michelin’s new CargoXBib Heavy Duty trailer tyres as original equipment on its latest Road King XV 20 26 S trailer. The agricultural trailer manufacturer chose the 560/60 R 22.5 fitment as an option for its new trailer. The new tyre replaces the original CargoXBib, and has been designed to increase longevity on the road and boost self-cleaning properties. Its high load capacity is almost 8,300kg per tyre, with a durable casing structure.

10 per cent of MOT failures due to tyres

The latest Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) figures show that 10 per cent of MOT failures were due to tyre issues – the second most frequent reason. Overall, DVSA reported that nearly 50 per cent of all faults found on MOTs last year could have been avoided by routine maintenance such as replacing bulbs, windscreen wipers and tyres.

Arisun and Westlake tyres gain SmartWay accreditation

Three Arisun and Westlake brand tyres, which are manufactured by Zhongce Rubber Group Co., Ltd. (ZC Rubber) in China, recently achieved Smartway fuel efficiency accreditation from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Westlake AT566 long haul tyre, Arisun AT570 long haul tyre, Arisun AD778 regional driver tyre all qualified of the low rolling resistance standard.
