Yokohama tyres selected for fitment on Toyota Prius

Yokohama tyres have been approved as an original equipment fitment on the latest version of the Toyota Prius. According to Yokohama Rubber, the BluEarth E70 will be supplied in size 215/45R17 87W for the Prius models sold in Europe, Japan and Oceania, while North American Prius models will get the BluEarth S34 all-season tyre in size P215/45R17 87V. The Yokohama Aspec A349 has been approved for original equipment fitment in markets outside these regions, and will be delivered to Toyota Motor Corporation in size 195/65R15 91H.

Two Kumho tyres receive Red Dot awards

For the fifth consecutive year, Kumho Tire has been honoured with a Red Dot Design Award. Kumho’s winning entries within the product design category of this year’s awards were the K-Silent Tyre and Road Venture MT51.

Sigmavision joins TyreSafe

Sigmavision Ltd has become the latest organisation to lend its official support to TyreSafe.

Based in the UK, Sigmavision Ltd is a high tech company, with world class expertise in laser sensor and camera imaging technology. Originally supplying offline and online laser profiling systems and laser measurement systems to the world’s largest tyre manufacturers, today it is the developer and manufacturer of TreadReader, a technology for tread depth measurement in the tyre aftermarket. Sigmavision now exclusively manufactures and supplies the TreadReader Hand Held scanner and TreadReader Drive Over ramp for aftermarket applications.

Improved warranty conditions for Mitas Premium tyres

Mitas has announced a significant upgrade of warranty conditions on Mitas Premium radial agricultural tyres. All Mitas Premium tyres manufactured and/or sold after January 2014 in Europe now have six years’ warranty coverage from the date of production, a free 24-month replacement tyre policy and three years’ field hazard qualifying period.

TyreSafe Awards submission deadline extended

The final deadline to enter the TyreSafe Awards 2016 has been extended to midnight Friday 8 April. The awards, which recognise the work of those campaigning to raise awareness of tyre safety in the UK during 2015, are open to non-members of TyreSafe as well as its supporters. Submissions have already been received from tyre, car and van manufacturers and retailers, along with road safety partnerships, and represent some inspiring campaign work. Shortlisted entrants and guests will gather at the awards’ evening ceremony on 14 July at The Belfry, Wishaw, to discover who will claim the prestigious accolades.

Nokian Tyres’ boss: How could we “have been so stupid”? – Ari Lehtoranta talks tyre test manipulation

“I didn’t have any choice.” – Ari Lehtoranta, president and CEO of Nokian Tyres, is convinced his decision to go public about the Finnish manufacturer’s manipulation of tyre tests in Europe over decades was the right decision. Lehtoranta, who has led the company since October 2014, wonders why Nokian Tyres went to the effort of supplying specially-made test tyres – particularly as the company’s non-manipulated products have always gained good results in tyre tests.

In an interview with Tyres & Accessories, Lehtoranta explains why it is now important to take part in the current public discussions on the subject and, through these talks, develop new industry-wide transparency rules.

Sumitomo investing to produce truck tyres in South Africa

Just over two years ago, Sumitomo Rubber Industries acquired Apollo Tyres South Africa, and with it the operation’s car tyre factory in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. While the plant supplies the local market with passenger car and light truck tyres, Sumitomo Rubber South Africa has to-date met local demand for truck and bus tyres with imported products. This will soon change; the company has announced it will invest 910 million rand (£41.3 million) to install new production equipment within the Ladysmith facility, and it aims to produce truck and bus tyres there from July 2018.

The good, the bad and the ugly – Auto Bild tests 50 tyres

In the introduction to its 2016 summer tyre test, Auto Bild comments that the range of tyres on offer has never been as large as it is today, and this abundance of choice can be overwhelming for drivers. The publication wishes to “shed light” on the current crop of tyres on the market, and thus assigned its testers the task of evaluating no less than 50 size 205/55 R16V tyres for compact cars.

Don’t end up with egg on your face this Easter – check your tyres

As 15 million vehicles head out on UK roads this Easter, tyre safety awareness organisation TyreSafe is reminding drivers to check their tyres – including pressures – before they set off. Driving with underinflated tyres makes it more difficult to control a vehicle, increases the distance required to stop and leaves it more vulnerable to a puncture or rapid deflation.

Avon Tyres revamps Castle Combe bridge, marking 60th anniversary of sponsorship

Avon Tyres has revamped its “landmark” Avon bridge at Castle Combe Circuit in Wiltshire. The brand is marking more than 60 years of its sponsorship deal with the circuit, which is only 11 miles from Avon’s base in Melksham; in fact, a recent renewal of its sponsorship will take the brand through to 75 years of association with one of the fastest tracks in the country.

Italian touring car championship to run on Hankook tyres

Hankook is now the exclusive tyre partner to the Campionato Italiano Turismo (Italian Touring Car Championship). The tyre maker says its partnership with the brand new championship takes effect immediately and will be maintained for the “next couple of years.” The 2016 Campionato Italiano Turismo season commences in Monza on 22 May and incorporates seven race weekends. All of the 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder turbocharged saloons racing in the series will compete on Hankook Ventus Race tyres in size 260/660 R 18.
