Pan-European Tyre Contract For Michelin

Michelin has won a five-year contract to supply trailer tyres to Transamerica Trailer Leasing (TTL) across Europe. TTL is Europe’s second-largest trailer leasing company, operating more than 21,000 trailers. The company is based in Barking, in the UK and has offices across Europe. It is owned by a Dutch bank. Michelin tyres will be specified as exclusive OE fitment on new trailers, while Michelin new and Remix tyres are being fitted to the fleet. No details of the value of the contract have been revealed, but TTL currently spends more than US$5 million on tyres annually.

“Intelligent Tyre System” From Goodyear

Goodyear has unveiled an “intelligent tyre system” at a mining exhibition in the USA. The six tyres on a 240-ton truck are fitted with a transponder which measures temperature and pressure and transmits the information every three minutes. The data can be viewed in the cab or at a remote location and, should a tyre become hot, operators can adjust routes accordingly. Goodyear expects to have 250 transponders in service this year and full commercialisation early next.

Yokohama Introduces New High-Performance Tyre A 539

In the last week of March Yokohama Rubber Co. presented the new A 539 tyre to the European trade press at the Japanese D-Parc (Daigo Proving Ground and Research Center). Thirty-three sizes of this tyre will be available in Europe, about 20 of them are already in the market, the remaining sizes to be introduced within the next four weeks. The A 539 has an asymmetrical tread pattern and, according to the manufacturer, the excellent qualities of sportiness, quiet running and good cornering stability on dry and especially on wet roads.

Firestone Recall Hysteria Fuelled By Advocates

Firestone has been forced, for the second time in the company’s history, to recall tyres in North America. 22 years ago, the recall of 14 million “f 500” tyres, almost ruined Firestone. The current situation refers to the recall of 6.5 million SUV tyres, the ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness line in the size P 235/75 R 15. About 2/3 of these tyres are earmarked for Ford’s OE demand for the Ford Explorer and the Ford Ranger. Bridgestone already announced that it would take a one-time $ 350 million charge and informed analysts that earnings estimates, $1 billion before the recall situation, had to be reduced by the amount of the taken charge. Whether this is the only financial impact that BFS will have to encounter is more than doubtful. In the US a horde of consumer advocates stand ready to sue BFS, all in the name of consumer advocacy. The likely cost of litigation is not included in the $ 350 million charge. The extent of the damage to BFS and its Firestone brand cannot be evaluated, it remains to be seen how the entire industry will be affected by this recall. Without any doubt, the Firestone brand has suffered a serious blow despite the fact that up until today it has not been demonstrated that the tyres were the cause of accidents investigated by NHTSA. BFS, so it seems, never really had a chance to manage the ensuing crisis in an optimal way. Although the crisis didn’t hit BFS completely out of the blue, BFS had to take into consideration the interests of its largest OE customer Ford on the one hand, and its own interest to protect the Bridgestone brand from any spill-over effects. One thing became abundantly clear: two kinds of tyre manufacturers currently exist. One the one hand, there are those who have already had to deal with a disastrous recall situation and on the other hand are those that will have to do just that at some uncertain time in the future.

No Recall For Cooper

Cooper Tire says it is “outraged” at the implication in recent press reports that there may be an investigation into its tyres. The company says that it has not been contacted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and there are no reasons for a recall. Furthermore, Cooper says it would be pleased to furnish the NHTSA with its records and data if required, and these data would confirm that the company’s tyres are safe.

With Reifen Gundlach to the Homeland of GT-Radial

In February Reifen Gundlach GmbH organised the “GT-Radial Tour 2000”, a trip to GT-Radial’s country of origin. The name is a brand of radial tyres (car summer/winter, van, light truck, off-road) produced by the Indonesian tyre manufacturer Gajah Tunggal. Under the brand name “Gajah Tunggal” the company also produces cross-ply tyres for trucks and buses as well as industrial tyres and motorcycle tyres under brand names “Nitto Tyre” and “IRC”. In Germany GT-Radial tyres have been sold exclusively by wholesaler Reifen Gundlach (part of the Japanese Itochu group) for about six years. During the event the tyre manufacturer presented (among others) two new tyres, “Preciro” (available from May, eleven sizes, series 60 and 65) and “Classiro” (QIII/2000, seven sizes, series 70). The current range of products has also been enlarged by new sizes/versions and the Indonesians also become increasingly interested in the small transporter and van segment. When Gajah Tunggal speaks of the intention to enter the radial truck tyre business, the company is probably taking the long view. Further volume growth in the winter car tyre segment is targeted, too. Especially in Germany, one of the most important markets for the company anyway. The export business (80 to 90 p.c.) in GT-Radial tyres is (more than) vital for the manufacturer, since sales figures in the non-radial tyre segment have fallen sharply due to the Asian crisis.

The Tyre As Part Of A System

The tyre can no longer be regarded as an isolated part of a car but is integrated into an increasingly complicated network or system. Progress in electronics especially has been revolutionary and has enormous influence on the work of tyre technicians. The engineers have to think in systems and integrate the tyre into all parts of the motive power of the car. Between the two corners “tyre wheel system” and the engine, is a wide field which the car makers and their suppliers are exploiting step by step. Immediately next to the tyres are modules such as brakes, shock absorbers and axles. Around the tyre is the “chassis”. The producers of certain of these elements in the past developed their own product without contacting the producers of neighbouring chassis parts. They were driven by their customers in the car industry, who gave information about the performance of the product with the target that all the parts should be compatible. As development progresses, this becomes harder and harder. In the future the suppliers will be forced to cooperate one with another, in order to make the best possible technology available for the car.

Tyre Recall Extended To Venezuela

Bridgestone/Firestone has announced that it is to recall 62,000 tyres sold in the Venezuelan market at an estimated cost of US$ 6.4 m. The tyres have been linked with 60 deaths in the country. The consumer protection agency is recommending investigation into charges of possible criminal negligence against Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, plus a number of civil law suits are planned.

ContiPremiumContact – Developed to Customers’ Specifications

From the spring of 2000 the new ContiPremiumContact will gradually replace the ContiEcoContact CP as the tyre for top-class cars. With this new summer tyre Hanover expects a significant increase in the replacement and the original equipment business in tyres with speed categories of 190 km/h and above during the next few years. The new tyre was presented to the international trade press in mid-February. A study undertaken by the development/consultancy “Institut für Sensorikforschung und Innovationsberatung” has established that the first and foremost user requirement of a tyre is safety. By which he means aquaplaning protection, short brake distances, steering precision, roadholding and tracking stability. With three construction specifications – an innovative bionic contour emulating a cat’s paw that extends in width when the brakes are applied, an asymmetric tread pattern and a third-generation silica compound – the PremiumContact wants to fulfil these requirements. Continental is seeking a total of 37 original equipment approvals from 14 vehicle manufacturers with the PremiumContact – available in eleven different 16 and 17 inch sizes. In the replacement business the ContiPremiumContact will initially be launched in 13 sizes, a 75 p.c. market coverage, according to the manufacturer. The new tyre will be positioned at the same price level as its predecessor.

Brand Extension For Michelin

The Michelin brand is strong in tyres, maps, tourist, hotel and restaurant guides. The Michelin brand name is an asset in itself, so together with The Licensing Company (TALC, London) the tyre maker will target other consumer goods’ markets through a licensing programme using the brand name and also Bibendum, the Michelin Man.

Investors Better Off With GM Shares Instead Of Ford

Analysts are recommending investment in GM rather than Ford. Ford is under the public microscope and the focus of analysts. This week, the shares have fallen 13%, representing damage to the group of more than US$ 10 bn. The management is accused of having known about the problems – which have led to the voluntary recall of Firestone tyres – for around two years. Consumer groups and official authorities want an answer to the question whether Ford has worked (ie changed or improved) on the suspension of its vehicles in Venezuela in order to overcome the problems there. The reaction at the stock exchange has probably gone far too far, as, even if the company had to mount a vehicle recall, the figure of US$ 10 bn is too high. The real costs, if any, would be in the region of US$ 1 bn or less.

German Tyre Brand Obligation Is Without Legal Force

This news is not brand new, but it has far-reaching consequences for the German tyre retail business. Tyre brand obligations which are usually signed in the vehicle documents are without legal force since this February and from now on will be regarded as recommendations. This means that on the one hand the owner of the car is responsible for the legally correct set of tyres on his car but on the other hand the tyre retailer is also responsible: if he makes a wrong recommendation which leads to an accident, he could be held liable, at least in part.

Blimp Celebrates Its 75th Birthday

Even more so than the original symbol of tyre maker Goodyear – the “Wingfoot” – the Goodyear Blimp has become a corporate icon. In June 1925 the “Pilgrim”, first of what was to be hundreds of Blimps, was launched at Wingfoot Lake airship facility near Akron, still headquarters of the world’s # 1 in tyres.
