The competitive last mile delivery sector, in which light commercial fleets are joined by the private cars of the more casual Amazon Flex-style workforce, is an interesting one for tyremakers: they must seek to offer comfortable and safe ride characteristics, while also making tyres rugged enough to withstand delivery conditions, such as consistent kerbing, all the while continuing to keep an eye on sustainability. The reliance of the long-term growth of the e-commerce segment on last-mile distribution to support increasingly fast delivery demands has meant that keeping these vehicles mobile on the road year-round has boosted the importance of reliable products, usually with all-season capabilities; while delivery is far from the only raison d’être of light commercial fleets, with mobile servicing a growth area the tyre sector is well aware of. The fine margins of such operations often mean there is plenty of opportunity for growth in this segment for sub-premium brands, as well as the latest premium products.
