How much would you pay for a Michelin Guide? £15.99? How about £68,000? This is the sum French restaurateur Jean Yves Schillinger parted with to acquire a full collection of all 300 Michelin Red Guides produced until 2000, including the 1900 edition that started the French tyre maker on the path to gourmet guide dominance. The guides were the star attraction at the dispersal sale of Alain Morel’s private collection of Michelin memorabilia – the world’s largest assortment of Michelin themed items. Schillinger says he plans to display the guides in his new, soon-to-open Michelin themed restaurant.

Federal shared its central stand in Hall 3 with its other brand Hero, during its sixth consecutive appearance at Reifen. Company representatives told Tyres & Accessories that the company “enjoyed great success in business… over the four day event,” during which the company emphasised the “environmental and conscientious performance” theme of its latest branding. The stand featured a backdrop of a forest pictured from dawn to dusk in order “to demonstrate our passion for “Green, Clean and Everything In-Between.”

The 8th annual China International Tire Expo – CitExpo – will be held at Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center this September 8-10. According to Wilko Fong, managing director of show operator Reliable International Exhibition Services, the number of registered exhibitors is expected to exceed last year’s CitExpo, with more than 300 exhibitors expected, covering 21,000 square meters of space over three halls.

Yokohama’s eco-sensitive “living wall” display, shown at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, has been given Exhibitor magazine’s Bronze Award in its prestigious annual Design Awards, announced in the May 2010 issue. Based in Fullerton, California, Yokohama incorporated in its winning display a new technology developed by NaturExhibitsT, featuring a 90-foot, grassy-like "living wall" that was decorative and left virtually zero waste, according to Jim MacMaster, Yokohama executive vice president and COO.

Pyrolysis based recycling company Carbon Green has identified Southern Ontario, Canada as the focus for phase one of the North American rollout of its full-scale tyre recycling plants. John Novak, president and CEO of Carbon Green, stated: “We have identified Canada as a world leader with very high standards of environmental practices which fits with our expansion plans for our unique proprietary technology that 100 per cent recycles used tyres into high grade commodities including Carbon Green (a carbon black substitute) which is the key component required for new tyre manufacturing with zero waste and zero emissions. We are therefore pleased to announce that we have chosen the southern Ontario region as the first location to launch our standardised plant rollout in North America.”

Tire Review reports that, while finding no fault, the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus has asked Michelin North America to “modify or discontinue, among other claims, certain advertising claims for the Hydro-Edge tyre.” The move comes in response to a complaint filed by Bridgestone Americas challenging certain claims made by Michelin in its advertisements.

Michelin has launched the UK part of a new global ad campaign based on the theme: “The right tyre changes everything.” According to the company, the new campaign is intended to illustrate the competitive advantages of Michelin tyres and will roll out across the country from 15 March. While creating a link with the grand tradition of Michelin advertising, the company has chosen a fully animated presentation for its new advertising campaign. It features the famed Michelin man, Bibendum, in an animated world. As ambassador of the Michelin brand, he comes to the aid of motorists in trouble, replacing their inefficient tyres with Michelin tyres that he pulls from his body, thereby enabling them to keep on driving.

Michelin has launched its new City Grip scooter tyre. With over 80 per cent of scooter riders using their machines daily, preparation for all weather conditions must be high on their agenda, and Michelin believes this is where the City Grip excels with its advanced sipe design. The tyre is the first of its type to feature Michelin’s latest Progressive Sipe Technology (PST) to improve safety on wet roads, the manufacturer states on the new tyre’s release. The City Grip replaces the Michelin Gold Standard range and covers “a large percentage” of the scooters 125cc and above.
