Let sleeping dogs lie, don’t poke the bear, and never, ever antagonise your company’s billionaire major shareholder – especially if he’s already voiced a desire to replace you. Klaus Kleinfeld should have borne this final point in mind when he penned a letter to Paul Singer earlier this month. The correspondence gave Singer, the man behind hedge fund Elliott Management, the ammunition needed to blast Kleinfeld out of Arconic Inc, parent company of Alcoa Wheels.

He has swapped his position as managing director Europe at Giti Tire, a role in which he was responsible for the Chinese maker’s commercial vehicle tyre business within the region, for a role at another Chinese manufacturer. Moglia is now general manager Europe at Triangle Tyre.

Goodyear has opened its new Tire Test Laboratory at its Innovation Center in Luxembourg. The manufacturer said it will measure tyre development performance, conduct regulatory and homologation tests, and perform quality control at the state-of-the art facility. The lab includes the latest technology for testing car, light truck and commercial truck tyres.

Apollo Tyres has thrown its hat into the European truck and bus radial ring and introduced a complete range for our regions. Furthermore, the company is only distributing these products online, through its own ApolloTyresDirect.com portal. The company is the first, and so far, only tyre manufacturer to use the direct online approach to market here, and it says pricing on the site is completely transparent and free from hidden costs or complicated deals.

A desire to purchase before price increases took effect on 1 April buoyed sales of Michelin tyres during the first quarter of 2017. Increased sales volumes accounted for 7.3 per cent of the 9.9 per cent year-on-year rise in net sales during the period. Net sales amounted to €5.57 billion in the first three months of the year. While Michelin hasn’t published its operating result or margins for the quarter, it expressed a hope that margins will improve in the second half of the year.

A change of leadership will occur within Continental’s business in China in June. On the first of the month, Enno Tang will become president of the Continental organisation for China. The current head of the Chassis & Safety division, China, and the Vehicle Dynamics business unit, China replaces Dr Ralf Cramer, who will conclude his contract as planned by mid-August 2017 and pursue new career opportunities outside of Continental. In his new role, Tang will report to the chairman of Continental AG’s Executive Board, Dr Elmar Degenhart.

The latest CRIA data, which was released by Chinese tyre industry association CRIA on 12 April, shows that Zhongce Rubber Group (also known as ZC Rubber) remains the number tyre manufacturer in China in terms of income, with 2016 sales of 18.38 billion yuan (RMB). Giti Tire’s Chinese operation (Giti Tire [China] Investment Co., Ltd.) trails by more than 6 billion yuan, but is a clear second place with 13.14 billion yuan in 2016 ahead of Sailun Jinyu Group, which reported income of 11.19 billion yuan last year.

In parallel with presenting its full-year 2016 results, Pirelli has revealed further details of its complex ownership structure and how it is splitting its consumer and industrial tyre business into two separate entities. The latest news is that, as of March 2017, TP Industrial holding (which owns the newly renamed PTG, which was called Pirelli industrial until recently – more on that later) has been separated out from Pirelli’s consumer tyre business. In practice this means the assignment of TP Industrial holding to Marco Polo, Pirelli’s sole shareholder. According to Pirelli, the assignment will “ensure that Pirelli and TP Industrial can pursue their own independent paths to growth and independently developed strategies”.

Giti Tire has released details of the six new Giti branded patterns that will be launched at CV Show 2017 (Birmingham NEC, 25-27 April). On show at stand 4G20 will be the GDR655 combi-road drive in 22.5”; the GTL919 long-haul trailer in 17.5”, 19.5”, and 22.5”; the GDR638 regional drive in 17.5” and 19.5”; the GT867 all-position urban in 22.5”; and the GAM837 all-position and GAM851 trailer mixed service patterns in 22.5”. The manufacturer said these models have been carefully selected to support its growing OEM presence throughout Europe or to target specific aftermarket sectors where growth potential has been identified. They each carry either the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) or M&S marking.

Cooper Tire Europe has extended its support of the World Rallycross Championship. In addition to being the official tyre supplier and associate partner of the FIA series for the fourth consecutive year, Cooper has become the title sponsor of the 2017 World RX of Hockenheim. Cooper has supported World RX since its inception in 2014, and supplies eight dry and eight wet tyres per Supercar driver at each of the 12 rounds. Cooper also became the presenting sponsor and tyre supplier to the second tier RX2 International series - previously RX Lites - for this season earlier in the year.

State-owned Chinese firm Guangzhou Vanlead Group, parent company of Wanli tyre brand manufacturer South China Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd, has signed two memorandums of understanding with Swedish firm Scandinavian Enviro Systems. The first of these covers the establishment of a turnkey recycling plant in Guangdong province, and the second the setting up of a joint venture to market Enviro’s patented technology across China.
