Pirelli P Zero Trofeo “the Toast of this Year’s Show”
As a brand somewhat synonymous with glamour and flare, Pirelli and the Autosport International Show are an excellent fit. The Italian brand took the opportunity of the 2010 show to display its vast array of motorsport tyres and Pirelli seemed sure that one particular model was turning the most heads among the 85,000 visitors. The P Zero Trofeo proved, in Pirelli’s opinion, to be “the toast” of this year’s show.

While some major tyre industry names produce calendars that illicit furtive glances and even the occasional ‘phwoar’ from enthusiastic admirers, the Kwik-Fit annual calendar may take your breath away for another reason entirely. Kwik-Fit’s Tyre Wall of Shame 2010 features twelve images intended to shock – photos of tyres in outrageous condition, including some with almost no tread left, sidewall ruptures through under inflation, and even one worn right down to the steel core. And while Pirelli’s calendar efforts involved weeks of shooting in Brazil, all the ‘models’ featured in Kwik-Fit’s 2010 edition were removed from customers' cars on a single day in December 2009. Scarier still, this was an average day – Kwik-Fit says it replaces tyres in similar conditions every day of the year.

Starting on December 16, 2009, Volkswagen’s sports-oriented ‘R-Line’ version of its Passat CC is leaving the factory fitted with tyres featuring Continental’s ‘ContiSeal’ technology. The size 235/45 R 17 and 235/40 R 18 self-sealing ContiSportContact 3 tyres featured on the Passat R-Line are capable of closing off punctures up to five millimetres in diameter, and thus Conti believes around 85 per cent of all tyre failures can be resolved through this technology.

The trend towards environmentally-friendlier vehicles, particularly those drawing on the benefits of start-stop technology, has been observed with interest by Johnson Controls. The company notes that, of the 20 plus new cars at the show fitted with its Varta batteries, nearly a quarter of them featured an AGM (absorbent glass matt) battery to power this energy-saving technology. Indeed, driven by EU targets to reduce CO2, the micro-hybrid market is accelerating. Johnson Controls notes that, since the adoption of stop-start technology in the BMW1 Series, more than a million micro-hybrid cars fitted with Varta AGM battery power have been sold in Europe. A further estimated 2.5 million micro hybrid vehicles will be manufactured by 2010, and this is expected to rise to 10 million by 2015.

Continue ReadingHawleys Tyres to Celebrate Centenary in 2010
Following Hawleys Tyres Ltd’s winning of the oldest tyre dealer in Britain title, Tyres & Accessories/tyrepress.com has compiled this overview of the company’s extensive history: Hawleys Tyres was formed by Ernest Hawley, a taxi driver who established the business by selling tyres to other taxi drivers in the area in 1910. The business grew gradually as vehicle take-up increased, before Ernest’s son Reg Hawley took over during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. During this period more depots were opened before Reg's sons David and Martin expanded the business in the 1970s. The company is now managed by Martin Hawley, his son Simon and David’s son Tim. The business employs 50 people at five branches in and around Sheffield. According to company literature, Ernest always had an interest in motorcars, and was one of the few who pioneered motoring in its earliest days. A foreman engineer at Oughtibridge Silica Works by profession, his links with the tyre trade began when he started a motor taxi service from outside a shop that the family owned in Wadsley Lane, in the Owlerton district of Sheffield. The taxi side of the business thrived and Hawley became known for doing a lot of his own repairs. This includes the mending of punctures, which were numerous in the early days, and the fitting of new tyres he obtained. The tyre business began when car owners came to him for help with punctures and even brought tyres bought elsewhere to him for fitting.
