Continental Tyres gets football ambassador support on ‘Grip the Nation’ tour
Continental Tyres has activated its long-running association with international football on its Grip the Nation roadshow. ITV Sport host Laura Woods and ex-England Lioness turned broadcaster Karen Carney MBE have joined the tyre brand as the England Women’s Senior Football Team prepares for its home European Championship tournament this summer. Conti is an official partner of the England Lionesses, and has been touring the UK with its Grip The Nation roadshow. The tyre manufacturer has handed out more than 13,000 free fan packs to help clubs and fans prepare for the tournament.

UK commercial vehicle (CV) production grew 26.5 per cent in the fifth month of 2022, with 7,900 new vans, buses, trucks, coaches and taxis leaving British factory lines. Reporting these figures, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) comments that CV manufacturers recorded their best May performance since 2012, continuing a strong start to 2022 with five consecutive months of growth.

UK car production in grew in May 2022 for the first time since June 2021. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) report that a total of 62,284 units left factory gates during the month, a rise of 13.3 per cent. SMMT notes, however, that the increase must be viewed in context against May 2021, which was still suffering significantly from pandemic-related headwinds. Output remains 46.3 per cent below the pre-pandemic month in 2019, with ongoing supply chain issues, increasing economic uncertainty, rising business costs and disruption caused by the war in Ukraine.

The charity, Speed Of Sight, is hosting an off-road track day for disabled people to enable them to drive at Cardenden Motocross Track in Lochgelly – its first event in Scotland in five years. The event is taking place Monday 15 August 2022 from 10am to 4pm. The track is less than an hour away from Edinburgh and just over an hour from Glasgow. The number of technicians qualified to work on electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK is rising rapidly, according to the latest data from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). The first three months of 2022 had the highest quarterly increase of EV qualified technicians on record. The data also suggests that the shortfall between EVs on the UK’s roads and approved technicians to service, repair and MOT them, will hit later than first anticipated, now 2028 instead of 2026.

Carlton Forest Renewables reports that its pyrolysis plant, the first continuous pyrolysis plant for end-of-life tyres (ELTs) in the UK, is just “days away” from becoming fully operational on a 24/7 basis. The plant at Carlton Forest’s Worksop site in Nottinghamshire has the capacity to process one tonne of tyre crumb each hour, producing approximately 3.6 million litres of tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) each year and around 2,500 tonnes of carbon char.

Gordon Balmer, executive director of the PRA, explained his members’ feelings thus: “The briefings provided by Government spokespeople to the media indicate that Ministers do not understand how fuel prices are set. We have contacted the Secretary of State for BEIS on multiple occasions offering to meet and explain fuel pricing. However, we are yet to receive a response.
