The UK’s used car market fell -4.3 per cent in the final quarter of 2022, with 1,571,295 transactions. The twelve months of the year saw transactions down -8.5 per cent. “Whilst 2022 experienced a decline in used car sales this was as a result of a particularly strong 2021. The Independent Garage Association (IGA) and Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) have discussed the MOT frequency and enhancements consultation in a meeting with the Department for Transport (DfT) and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The associations asked the DfT why a large and complex consultation, covering 27 areas within the MOT test, was published with only a six-week response period. In response, the department explained that Ministers are focusing on saving consumers money and wanted to use the consultation as an opportunity to evaluate if any areas of the MOT could contribute to further savings. UK automotive trade bodies have launched a petition, which aims to prevent the proposed four-year interval before the first MOT test on new vehicles. Tyres are a major cause of MOT test failures. The industry has often made a strong case against increasing MOT test intervals on the basis that it provides a necessary prompt for UK motorists to change tyres.

Hofmann Megaplan launches new Luxus tyre changer
Hofmann Megaplan is building on the UK introduction of the “premium specification” Luxus garage equipment brand with the new megamount Luxus 70LLF tyre changer. The company says the range embodies a “best-in-class” concept, claiming the tyre changer is the “toughest” yet seen on the UK market. Made in Italy by a well-established producer of tyre changers, Hofmann Megaplan says the megamount Luxus 70LLF’s structure “goes back as far as the early 1980s – when more steel was used and the manufacturing process was arguably more ‘artisan’.” The unit comes with Luxus’ five-year warranty, an annual Service & Inspection from a Hofmann Megaplan factory-trained engineer, and features as standard that would often be considered extras.
