Aeolus bringing full commercial range to CV Show
Chinese tyre maker Aeolus says it intends to use its presence at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show to demonstrate the value/performance proposition offered by the brand to buyers and specifiers of commercial tyres. The company plans to exhibit its full range of truck, bus, coach and van tyres in conjunction with exclusive UK distributor Kings Road Tyres.

To facilitate the scheme’s continued expansion, Hankook Tyre UK has appointed Nick Maltby its franchise development manager. Maltby brings over 30 years of tyre trade experience, gained through senior positions at large independent retailers, into his new role. He joins existing franchise manager Ben Francis in the development of the Hankook Masters Programme.

With in-built point of sale functionality, Autopart Tyres gives Darcy’s access to extensive features such as labour allocation, parts look up, and technical data. Darcy’s can also keep in touch with its customers by SMS and email, which reduces the cost of postage and paper. The cloud-hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) approach allows the company to spread server license fees through monthly payments.

Cooper Tire Europe has announced that it is sponsoring Arsenal Football Club in a multi-year deal. The partnership, which will begin before the start of the 2014/15 season, will see the Melksham-based tyre manufacturer become an official partner to the north London club. The exclusive sponsorship designates the Cooper brand as the first “Official Tyre of Arsenal Football Club for Europe, Russia, Middle East, South Africa and selected north African countries and links the company’s passion for performance to football through the development of various advertising campaigns, consumer marketing programmes and promotions. No details of how much has been invested in the partnership have been revealed.

Autoparts UK has produced a new Ultratec oil selection poster to assist garages and motorists with selecting the correct oil for a specific vehicle. The use of incorrect engine oil can lead to problems and result in expensive repairs. Also, car manufacturers have clearly defined oil drain intervals for oils which meet their specifications and the use of a lower quality lubricant in, for example, a long oil drain schedule can result in reduced engine component life and poor fuel economy.

According to statistics published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car registrations in the UK rose 7.6 per cent year-on-year. Last year’s best-seller the Ford Fiesta retained the top ranking in January 2014, with 9,072 units registered during the month. Ford also occupied the number two position, with Focus registrations reaching 5,333 units, while the Vauxhall Corsa was the third best-selling car in the UK, with 4,470 units registered.

Apollo Vredestein UK managing director Stuart Jackson revealed several strategic details with which Apollo plans to grow its brand in the UK. Apollo is to introduce a truck and bus tyre range and expand its passenger car tyre lines into a fourth generation, with a sizeable investment in UK marketing “to support brand growth.” The tyre manufacturer will also develop its links with Manchester United, both as a partner in a sports facility initiative and as a significant branding opportunity, with video and print marketing materials featuring the purple of Apollo and the red of the Stretford team.

Goodyear Dunlop says it is “not possible” to retain motorsport tyre production at its current UK location, and therefore this will transfer to plants in France (Montlucon) and Germany (Hanau) later in the year. Nevertheless, upon urging from MP for Erdington Jack Dromey on 5 February, the Prime Minister indicated he’d investigate the matter more closely. He told the House of Commons that I am happy to look carefully at it and see what can be done in order to get a good outcome.”

A survey by The Parts Alliance has revealed that garage owners are feeling confident about the future with many planning to invest in equipment and training, and some looking to take on extra staff. Some 67 per cent of those who responded said they expected the first half of 2014 to see an upturn in trade and, looking further ahead, some 73 per cent felt ‘very confident’ about the year as a whole. The survey was conducted among garages belonging to the Servicesure Autocentre garage programme run by The Parts Alliance.
