Michelin buys Canopy Simulations for its ‘virtual driver’ technology
Michelin has bought UK-based simulation software specialist Canopy Simulations for an undisclosed fee. Since Michelin has been developing dynamic virtual tyre models for the last couple of decades using its Tame Tire software, it appears the plan is to combine Canopy’s “virtual driver” with Tame Tire, taking Michelin’s virtual modelling to the next level.

Trade Remedies Authority extend NTDA’s consultation deadline
The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has extended the NTDAs deadline for submission of pre-sampling questionnaires following a request from the tyre industry body. At the start of May, TRA initiated two transition reviews into anti-dumping (T0035) and anti-subsidy (T0036) measures on lorry and bus tyres imported from China. However, the initial deadline for that was 18 May 2023 – too short a time period for many.

Minimise costs with scheduled tyre maintenance, says ATS Euromaster
Fleets are continually looking for ways to minimise their outgoings in the current economic climate. Longer lead times result in fleets running vehicles for extended periods, and many are coming under pressure to contain costs. Longer lifecycles also influence tyre replacement, and ATS Euromaster sales director Jason Chamberlain thus emphasises that it’s in “fleet managers’ best interests to implement a more planned approach to tyre maintenance in order to minimise costs.”

Tyres the number 1 reason for MOT failures
A recent analysis of over 38 million MOTs conducted in 2021 has found that almost one in five resulted in failure, with tyres the most common cause. Poor condition tyres or not meeting the legal requirement of at least 1.6mm of tread depth contributed to 1,101,839 MOT failures across the UK in a single year. Furthermore, the driver-side front tyre tread depth accounted for more than a quarter of these, the equivalent of 368,853 MOT failures, One Sure Insurance found.

An Abertillery MOT tester has been sentenced to 12 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £2128, according to DVSA Enforcement. Giti Tire supporting Reid Freight Services on road and track
Craig and Simon Reid and the rest of the team at Reid Freight Services are completing final preparations to transport their two racing trucks to Brands Hatch for the first event of the 2023 British Truck Racing Championship season when Tyres & Accessories visits the regional haulage firm’s Stoke-on-Trent site. The brothers and their father, David, have a long history of competing in one of motorsport’s most unique disciplines, with a reception area lined with trophies and memorabilia from track-based competition to show for it. In 2023, both brothers are competing in division one of the BTRC. Craig, who is infectiously enthusiastic about racing if also endearingly downbeat about his own chances in the competition, took the time to tell T&A about the Reid brothers’ trucks, the competition, and his affinity for the tyres of the series’ exclusive tyre supplier, Giti, both on-track and on the Reid fleet of trucks, heavy haulage trailers and specialist rail logistics units.
