Winter tyres the safest option, even without snow and ice – TyreSafe
The winter has been fairly mild so far, but this is no reason for complacency when it comes to driving and your car’s tyres. TyreSafe reminds motorists that winter tyres can help them stay safe and mobile on the road, even if we don’t receive a white Christmas this year. The safety organisation recommends a separate set of winter tyres as the safest choice for British motorists, but says all-season tyres also provide an acceptable balance between summer and winter tyre performance.

Four UK cities have been chosen to find out how driverless cars might fit into everyday life. £10 million of funding from Innovate UK has given the green light for testing innovative driverless cars in the real world as announced by George Osborne in last weeks Autumn Financial Statement. Greenwich (south east London), Milton Keynes and Coventry (working together as one project) and Bristol will run formal trials lasting between 18 and 36 months from January 2015.

The UK car market continued to grow at a rate far higher than the European average in November. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association, or ACEA, reports that the UK market grew 8.0 per cent year-on-year during the month, contrasting with other major markets such as France, which contracted 2.7 per cent, and Germany, which shrank 1.8 per cent year-on-year. UK growth even outstripped that posted by the EU members that joined the union after 2004; their average year-on-year growth was 5.5 per cent in November. Average growth across the European Union during the month was 1.4 per cent.

Increases in freight rates during the last quarter of the year happened earlier than expected, according to Maritime Cargo Services’ Rob Shelley. The freight forwarding company said that the market, led by supply and demand, had seen rates harden due to increased demand for shipping space “earlier than expected”. This ahead of schedule peak season combined with “higher than forecast import volumes” to increase both rates – “in some cases by 150 per cent” – and dockside waiting times.

The new contract heralded the introduction of a range of initiatives aimed at maximising fleet uptime and lowering running costs, Bridgestone states.

The servicing chain crowned third year NVQ Floyd Ullah (19) from Scunthorpe the winner of its annual apprentice competition, noting that competition for the accolade is growing annually.

Figures for new truck vehicle registrations have revealed 2014 has been a “predictably slow year” as the market continues to feel the effects of the introduction of Euro 6 legislation, according to UK managing director for Continental, David Smith. Smith, who in 2013 was promoted into a wider European market management role, which now includes Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, was speaking at Continental’s annual market trends briefing on 5 December. During his presentation he described the results for 2014 as “unsurprising”, due in part to the rush to register Euro 5 models before the legislative cut-off dates. Year-to-date figures released by the SMMT have shown that total registrations for trucks in 2014 are down by nine per cent, with bus and coach registrations also down this year, by three per cent.
