Bridgestone staying strong in a growing truck tyre market
The good news is that with demand up and with the company selling as big a proportion of retreads as ever, Bridgestone’s UK truck tyre business remains a key player in the UK truck tyre market. In the Republic of Ireland things are even better. However, premium manufacturers like Bridgestone have also seen the rise in the prominence of lower cost alternatives in recent years. While companies like Bridgestone continue to occupy leading positions when it comes to blue-chip and other national fleets, the wider context brings new challenges with it, especially when it comes to countering volume versus value strategies. Tyres & Accessories spoke with Bridgestone UK commercial director Greg Ward in order to find out more.

2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and workplace equipment supplier Slingsby says new figures revealing the UK is now one of the safest countries to work in the world must be applauded, but warns there is still work to do because thousands of unnecessary accidents still occur every year. The figures, released by The Health & Safety Executive (HSE), show that in 1974 more than 650 people lost their lives every year at work, compared to a record low of 133 today. The numbers of injuries occurring at work have also fallen significantly from 336,701, 40 years ago, to 78,222 now. Slingsby supplies more than 35,000 workplace products, including a vast range of health and safety related equipment, which helps organisations across all sectors comply with related legislation.
Continue ReadingHealthcare sector worst for insurance claims
MoneySuperMarket analysis of over 11 million car insurance quotes reveals the top ten professions in the UK that make both the fewest, and most, at fault claims on their car insurance policies. Surgeons are most likely to make an at-fault claim, followed by a GP, health visitor and hospital consultant; meaning the healthcare sector may be best placed to save your life, but are the ones to avoid on the road. The only sector outside of health care to enter the top ten table for at-fault claims are probation officers, who will no doubt spend a lot of time in the car between meeting offenders, victims and the police.

Wheels of change?
The recession had a disproportionately large impact on the haulage industry. With many firms going to the wall and others trimming their fleets right back and running their tyres to death, this all had a similarly big impact on the truck tyre business too. Back in 2009 Tyres & Accessories observed that the combination of shrunken demand and aggressive competition from up-and-coming manufacturers (namely Hankook at that time) really shook the market up. Five years later, comparing the market then and now reveals that this “shake-up” trajectory continues well into the new decade, with both Hankook and Giti occupying significant market share positions that simply were not feasibly early in the new millennium.

The ad hoc days of simply replacing old with new – with little consultation with fleet operators in between – are long gone, with ‘joined-up’, strategic partnerships in place to maximise the life of each and every tyre fitted.
