Pro-Align debuts Hunter QuickTread system
Shoppers at the Asda supermarket in Colne, Lancashire, were the first members of the public in the UK to be offered the opportunity to have their car’s tyre tread depths examined with the new Hunter QuickTread drive over tread depth measurement system. The equipment was brought along and managed by wheel servicing equipment specialist Pro-Align in conjunction with Asda Tyres and Tyre Safe as part of its support for October’s Tyre Safety Month.

New research commissioned by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) reveals that nearly one in five MPs believe all technicians in their local garage are qualified to work on today’s vehicles. But, according to the IMI, the reality is quite different, with no mandatory requirement for vehicle technicians to be qualified – or to ensure qualifications are kept up to date and in line with new vehicle technology. With separate IMI research revealing that 53 per cent of drivers planning to buy or lease a new car in the next two years are considering an electric or hybrid vehicle, the IMI is urging government to tackle this issue in the interests of public safety – and to help rebuild motorists’ trust in the sector.

The study, commissioned by insurance company There researched the sick day habits of 25 different industries. Transportation and distribution workers take more time off work due to serious injuries sustained on the job than almost any other industry.

28,000 new jobs could be created in the UK automotive supply chain by 2020, according to a new forecast report from industry trade body The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The report, “The future of UK automotive manufacturing in 2025 and beyond”, identifies growth in vehicle manufacturing and a move to connected and autonomous technology as presenting significant opportunities for British component suppliers in the coming years. It estimates that British car production is set to reach a record two million vehicles annually by 2020 – a 33 per cent increase on the current 1.5 million.

The Metzeler Racetec RR has been named ‘Tyre of the Year’ by Motorcycle News, having been ranked highest in the comparative test held by the publication at Jerez circuit earlier this year. In the test, the tyre was judged to be the “best sporty tyre” among products from five other manufacturers, lapping fastest at road pressures on track. The tyre tested was also the hardest of the three Metzeler Racetec RR compounds (the K3), designed for everyday road use and trackdays. Although road legal, the K1 and K2 compounds are intended for more pure track activities.

The annual coffee morning is Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest fundraising event, raising money for people living with cancer. In 2014, over 200,000 people signed up, raising a record £25 million.
