November is riskiest month for pedestrians
New analysis from Direct Line Car Insurance and PACTS (an All-Party Parliamentary Group) reveals pedestrian casualties on Britain’s roads peak in November each year. Reviewing the available monthly road casualty data, from 2010-2014, the average number of reported serious pedestrian casualties rises from a low of 397 in August to a peak of 565 in November, an increase of 42 per cent. Furthermore, pedestrians account for more than a quarter (26 per cent) of serious injuries each November.

Rema Tip Top Automotive UK unveils Leeds Training Centre
Tyre Industry Awards 2015 winner Rema Tip Top has opened its new tyre repair and garage equipment training centre following significant investment in Leeds headquarters. Hosting Tyres & Accessories at a launch event in October, immediately after its NTDA 2015 Tyre Industry Award for Tyre and Aftermarket Supplier of the Year, the company showed how the site has been entirely refitted, having lain derelict for around half a decade before the acquisition of Doncaster’s Ace Conveyor Equipment in 2008 and subsequent consolidation of the industrial business. The new centre will provide accreditation for the new generation of tyre technicians, with an expanding variety of courses delivered over one or two days. Rema Tip Top chief executive Mark Insley stated: “We recognise the importance of education and training to an industry which is responsible for the safety of millions of people on our roads on a daily basis. With this well-equipped and highly professional facility we will provide an invaluable resource for our customers.”

RHA declares National Lorry Week ‘outstanding success’
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has declared the first ever National Lorry Week (26-31 October) to be an outstanding success and has confirmed that plans are already underway for an even bigger scale event in 2016. RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said: “We launched National Lorry Week with the #LoveTheLorry strap line to do two things: First, to raise the profile of our magnificent industry in the eyes of the public and the popular media and second, to hammer home to government the very real challenges that we face, with particular emphasis on the critical driver shortage.”

Titan International, Inc. has entered into a licensing agreement with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The agreement allows Titan to distribute and sell Goodyear-brand agricultural tyres in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Russia and other CIS countries, as well as manufacture such farm tyres in parts of the licensed territory outside the European Union. The expansion of the Goodyear-brand farm tyre licensing covers more than a hundred countries, including the UK, Eire, Germany and Italy. In addition, Titan has purchased certain Goodyear moulds and other assets currently located in Poland, Turkey and South Africa.

Watchdog: Kwik Fit charged customers for nitrogen without asking
Leading national tyre retailer Kwik Fit found itself subject to investigation by the BBC’s Watchdog consumer programme on 5 November, with presenters asking: “They sell 5 million tyres a year, but are they inflating bills by charging for thin air?” Following that less that auspicious introduction, based on customer complaints and the testimony of a whistle-blower that still works in Kwik Fit branches, Watchdog went on to suggest the national fast fit chain is charging customers £1.50 per tyre for nitrogen inflation without asking.

The latest car registration figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the market is levelling off, after a 1 per cent drop in October 2015 figures. 177,664 new cars were registered in the month, down 1.1 per cent on last year’s figure, following 43 consecutive months of growth.
