There’s no denying that the tyre business has become more digital and connected than ever before, but there are a number of sides to that equation. We know that between 60 and 80 per cent of tyre-buying consumers were doing pre-sale research online before the pandemic. Similarly, industry insiders have been saying that 10 per cent of tyres are bought online for something like a decade now. But anecdotal evidence from tyre retailers themselves reveals that, amongst those working for the large chains at least, many customers walk through the door to receive a tyre change that has already been booked online. Apparently, some of the younger generation just walk in and hold up a QR code on their phone! IAAF joins global automotive Right to Repair movement
The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has joined other global association leaders to support the critical global Right to Repair movement by signing the new right to repair position statement. The statement enumerates the core beliefs of the movement and the objectives and intended outcomes of right to repair legislation. Importantly, the document sets out ten best practice principles to developing a framework for right to repair legislation that any supporting country can use and adapt to their needs.

NGK-sponsored Max Coates’ debut season in the Porsche Sprint Challenge GB kicked up a gear at the latest round at Croft Circuit, the Yorkshireman’s home venue, when he recorded three podium places including a fantastic victory. Max and the Graves Motorsport team’s win came in the final race of the round when he finished in second position before being promoted to the win after contact between the early race leaders was reviewed and penalties applied.

Michelin Connected Fleet names new UK sales director
Maxime Dupuy has been named as UK sales director, Michelin Connected Fleet as part of plans to grow its share of larger fleet customers. Dupuy has been promoted from national sales director for France after five years working for the fleet management services and solutions company. He previously held roles at the car rental and leasing business, Sixt. Dupuy will be based at Michelin Connected Fleet’s London offices, reporting to Fred Nahon.

EV inquiry launched by House of Lords
Given the importance of decarbonising transport to reach net zero, the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee launched an inquiry into electric vehicles (EVs) on Wednesday 9 August. The call for evidence is available online here. The aim of the inquiry is to understand how the Government will achieve its target of decarbonising cars and vans in the UK, with a particular focus on passenger cars, as well as exploring the main barriers to doing so. It will also seek to understand the costs, alongside the benefits, associated with the 2030 end date of sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans in the UK, and Government progress towards both its 2030 and 2035 deadlines.

Michelin appoints Carl Williams as UK, Ireland technical team head
Michelin has appointed Carl Williams as customer engineering support team manager UK & Republic of Ireland at Michelin Tyre plc. He will lead a team of experienced technical managers working across all product lines. Williams will take over from Rob Blurton, who will retire from Michelin at the end of September after 44 years with the business, much of it spent supporting truck and bus fleet customers.

Bridgestone shares that its Webfleet fleet management solution has “smashed” the Guiness World Records title for the greatest distance travelled by an electric van on a single charge. Webfleet-sponsored drivers Kevin Booker, Sam Clarke and Fergal McGrath drove a Fiat E-Scudo fitted with Bridgestone Duravis tyres 311.18 miles (500.8 km) in total.

Essex agricultural rim manufacturer, Brocks Wheel & Tyre (BWT) has launched a new wheel brand, 3S, and is fitting Bridgestone’s VX-Tractor as original equipment. The new brand is the company’s first since it was founded 15 years ago in Thaxted, where the company now employs 16 members of staff. Director Will Brock and son Eugene, the company’s business development director, launched 3S at the Royal Highland Show in June. They say demand is already high for the UK manufactured wheels, which are also being supplied as an option in an eye-catching powder-coated chrome finish.

Tyre Extinguishers, the movement aiming to make it “impossible to own an SUV” by deflating these vehicles’ tyres, has drawn the tragedy into its campaign and “takes responsibility” for destroying all the tyres on at least 60 vehicles at a dealership 170 miles from the collision site.

Demand for electric vans almost doubles as UK van market continues to grow
The number of UK light commercial vehicles (LCV) registered in the UK grew for the seventh consecutive month in July, increasing by 44.2 per cent to 26,990 units, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). In the best July since 2020, registrations were also up 4.4 per cent compared with pre-pandemic 2019 volumes, a result of rising demand for new vans, pickups and 4x4s and the easing of supply chain issues constraining production.
