Pirelli apprentices talk about their experiences at Carlisle Skills Fair
Pirelli has supported the 2016 Carlisle Skills Fair alongside other businesses from the local area. Held at the Sands Centre in the city, the event brought together local training providers, employers and career advisors. The aim was to showcase to young people and to those out of work in the area what types of roles are actually on offer and how to make that next step into forging a career. The event was hosted by local MP John Stevenson.

Central Tyre, Chester has been names as the 2015/16 Pirelli Performance Centre of the year. Each year Pirelli awards one of its 107 Performance Centres with the PPC of the year title. To determine the winner 11 top performing PPCs had a video mystery shop exercise, scored by an independent assessor. Central Tyre, Chester achieved a near perfect score and were therefore recognised with the award.

The estimated cost of tyre-related incidents to the economy over the last five reported years is £416 million, averaging £83.2 million annually, according to Department for Transport figures to 2014.

Franchised dealers are vulnerable to losing service business to the independent garages as EU legislation levels out the playing field. According to the Independent Garage Association (IGA), recent surveys have shown independent garages taking an increasing market share of service work despite difficulty carrying out certain functions. This limitation will soon be removed, allowing independents to carry out every part of a service and repair for their customers.

Goodyear has become the sole tyre supplier to Newport Bus, the city of Newport’s principal bus operator. The fleet of nearly 100 buses, with 45 services covering a network of 200 square miles, will be fitted with Goodyear UrbanMax MCA and MCD Traction tyres. Scott Pearson, managing director at Newport Bus, says: We were impressed with the UrbanMax product, in particular its durability and all season capability. However what really clinched it for us was the service offer from TruckForce.

Michelin representatives declined to comment on individual cases, but local press reports suggest particular offers have already been made.

The latest Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) figures show that 10 per cent of MOT failures were due to tyre issues – the second most frequent reason. Overall, DVSA reported that nearly 50 per cent of all faults found on MOTs last year could have been avoided by routine maintenance such as replacing bulbs, windscreen wipers and tyres.

Cenex – the UK’s first Centre of Excellence for low carbon technologies – successfully helped Nottingham place a winning bid securing £6.1m for the first ‘Go Ultra Low Cities’ scheme, set up by the Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV). Other winning cities including London, Bristol and Milton Keynes, will also receive funding through the programme which was launched nationally by Secretary of State, The Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, at the University of Nottingham.
