Suspended sentence for £100k Pirelli theft man
Although he claimed no intentional involvement in the theft of Pirelli tyres worth more than £102,000, Graham Wait was found guilty of conspiracy to commit theft in February. At his sentencing at Carlisle Crown Court last Friday, Wait received an 18 month suspended sentence for the role he played in the theft of 358 Pirelli tyres, and was ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs and to perform 200 hours of unpaid work.

Continued growth in European, UK commercial vehicle markets
Demand for new commercial vehicles in the EU increased for the 15th month in a row in March, reports the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). Across the entire EU, new commercial vehicle registrations of all types rose 8.0 per cent to 242,049 units. Generally speaking, the highest rates of growth were recorded in the EU12 countries, where registrations were up an average of 15.9 per cent during the month.

Pirelli-equipped British GT to take on Rockingham challenge
Pirelli’s exclusive supply deal with the British GT Championship enters its second round on the high-speed banked oval and twisty infield of Northamptonshire’s Rockingham circuit on 30-31 April. Record-breaking lap times were set on the new P Zero rubber at the season’s curtain-raiser at Brands Hatch, with Derek Johnston and Jonny Adam claiming victory and an early GT3 championship lead in their TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage GT3. Competition was fiercer, with Bentley, Lamborghini and BMW making it four different manufacturers in the top four in the race.

Bridgestone calls for UK to follow Ireland’s lead in illegal tyre fines
Bridgestone has called on the UK Government to implement mandatory fines on motorists who drive with defective or worn tyres. The manufacturer said the UK should follow Ireland’s lead in the interests of road safety; the Irish minister for transport, tourism and sport, Paschal Donohoe announced the new fixed charge notice (FCN) offence for motorists in mid-April, with fines of €80 now in effect.

Oak Tyres quadruples Manchester warehouse capacity with new site
Merseyside-based tyre wholesaler and company behind the Davanti private brand, Oak Tyres, has relocated to a new and larger facility in Manchester. The new warehouse in Trafford Park is located not far from Oak Tyres’ existing facility and quadruples the company’s capacity in the Greater Manchester area. As well as providing the wholesaler with additional capacity, 20 new jobs have been created through the project. The new warehouse opens in early May and is expected to help Oak Tyres to increase its market share across the Northwest of England.

This year’s UK tyre retail ranking shows that the fastest growing tyre retailer is Micheldever’s Protyre chain, which added some 21 branches to its network in the last year – by far the fastest growth (both in terms of branch count and growth percentage) of any tyre retailer we are tracking. Nevertheless, ETEL remains the largest overall and is also the fastest faller, with the company running 9 points of sale less than in our 2014/2015 research.
