Singapore-based contract tyre brand – Firenza is promoting its ST-05A pattern as a “superior mid-range” option, with company representatives characterising the production as “a popular option in the UHP sector in the UK and throughout Europe”. The Firenza ST-05A high performance pattern is produced for the various European markets it serves at a “technologically advanced production facility in South East Asia”. According to the company, this factory incorporates up-to-the-minute tyre building innovations with particular emphasis being placed on providing an attractive design that also meets all tough and high-powered demands of sports-minded drivers of high-powered saloon cars.

Blaby District Council in Leicestershire has switched to a Michelin tyre policy across its commercial vehicle fleet following a year-long trial on a set of Michelin X Works tyres. Most of the council’s fleet, which includes a mix of 18 Mercedes-Benz and Dennis refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), a 12.5 tonne road sweeper, two 5.2 tonne Iveco Dailys and a single 7.5 tonne DAF 45, plus 30 light commercial vehicles, now runs on Michelin products. All tyre servicing will be carried out by local dealership Lodge Tyres’ Leicester branch. The council is also specifying the tyres as original equipment.

Team CAM Pain entered the 19th annual Dragon Boat Regatta at Gloucester Docks on Sunday 8 May. The team and its decorative 40-foot dragon boat raced to raise money for the event’s chosen charities: Cancer Research UK; Sue Ryder (local); “Charlie’s” – a new cancer drop-in centre in Gloucester; the Air Ambulance; and a village in Nepal destroyed by an earthquake, where the money will be used to purchase 200 new ovens being placed in newly- built houses.

While low prices for the major commodities and metals have affected tyre makers on a global level and prompted production cutbacks for giant OTR mining tyres, the direction coal has taken is of greater significance here in the UK. British Geological Survey figures show output at British open cast coal mines fell almost 40 per cent between 2010 and 2014. This decline has understandably affected sales of tyres to this sector, yet the news is not all bad for OTR tyre manufacturers and suppliers – local demand for other off-road applications is in much better shape. Technical manager Jock Aitken recently went through Michelin’s products for these areas with us, and shared how to get the most from them.

The government has launched a £2 million fund to encourage more businesses to switch to hydrogen-fuelled vehicles. The Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Fleet Support Scheme will allow local authorities, health trusts, police forces, fire brigades and private companies to bid for funding to add hydrogen-powered vehicles to their fleets. Bids for the FCEV Fleet Support Scheme must be submitted by Monday 4 July 2016. Successful bidders will be informed later this year.

Michelin reports the signing of landscaping products supplier Marshalls to its Effitires tyre management programme. The price-per-kilometre deal covers all of the company’s mixed fleet of 173 DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Renault and Volvo tractor units and rigid trucks, along with 210 crane-equipped SDC trailers. It extends Marshalls’ existing Michelin preferred tyre supplier arrangement.
