Conti: Truck TPMS should be mandatory
As many as one in four truck tyres may be running underinflated by 10 per cent, according to research conducted by Continental Tyres. This, of course, not only leads to significantly higher fuel costs but contributes to the likelihood of tyre failure, which is currently responsible for 20 per cent of all truck breakdowns. That’s where Conti’s “safe, reliable and efficient solutions” strategy comes in. Ian Jackson, Continental Tyres’ Technical Systems, sales & services manager explained how the correct application of a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) such as ContiPressureCheck can positively impact business. Looking forward, Conti is advocating for truck TPMS to become a legal requirement and is working closer integration between its systems and truck telematics.

Michelin Corporate Foundation becomes V&A Museum of Design founding partner
Michelin Corporate Foundation has been announced as a corporate founding partner in the development of the V&A Museum of Design Dundee. The V&A Museum will be the first in the UK outside of London, and is part of a wider £1 billion regeneration scheme for the city. Due for completion in 2018, the foundation will support both its initial and ongoing development with a significant investment. A gallery within V&A Dundee will take on the Michelin name for a term of 25 years. Michelin has strong ties to Dundee; its tyre plant on Baldovie Road is the city’s largest employer. The French manufacturer committed to an investment of £52 million to modernise the plant in 2015, and was recently visited by the Queen.

TyrePal launches TPMS CANbus system
TyrePal has launched its latest product, the CANbus tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The technology is specifically designed for use in buses, commercial vehicles and customised vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances. The latest product includes a module that can be connected to the vehicles CANbus system. This allows tyre pressure sensors to interact with the other parts of the vehicle, such as on-board display, control systems and integrated telematics.

NTDA names Tyre Industry Awards 2016 finalists
24 hours after nominations closed on 2 August, the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) has published the list of finalists for the 2016 NTDA Tyre Industry Awards. According to the association, over the last three months the NTDA has been “inundated” with submissions. As a result a total of 57 entries across the eight award categories have now made it to the final.

Chelsea FC launches 3rd kit displaying Yokohama branding
Chelsea FC has unveiled its new third kit for the 2016/17 season, following the recent introduction of this season’s home and away shirts. All three shirts feature Yokohama Tyres branding, after the Japanese tyre-maker signed what is thought to be the second most valuable shirt sponsorship deal in English football. As official shirt partner to Chelsea, Yokohama will appear across the chest of all of the club’s shirts until at least 2020, giving the brand significant exposure and awareness around the world.

Truckforce buys 57 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters
Truckforce, Goodyear Dunlop’s dedicated truck tyre mobile service and breakdown division, has replaced the first Mercedes-Benz Sprinters it bought five years ago with 57 new models. The operator began using Mercedes-Benz vehicles in 2011. It has since invested in a further 60 Sprinters and, with the arrivals of its latest, now runs a fleet of 165.

The apprentices qualify with an NVQ Level 3 Standard combing learning with practical, on-the-job training.

According to the IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), UK manufacturing fell to its lowest level since February 2013 in July. At 48.2 in July, the metric was down from 52.4 in June. This is only the second time since early 2013 that the PMI has fell to a sub-50.0 level. The move was reportedly the steepest decline since October 2012.
