LeasePlan urges drivers to carry out simple checks
LeasePlan UK has reacted to the RAC’s 2016 Report on Motoring that revealed car maintenance was the second biggest concern for motorists. Jennifer Gradden, fleet risk management account director at LeasePlan UK, part of the world’s largest vehicle management group, comments, “There is a worrying level of motorists in the UK who are baffled by car maintenance. It’s hugely important to maintain the upkeep of a vehicle, not only to conserve its value and improve fuel economy, but also because poor maintenance can be dangerous and potentially cause an accident.

Go-Ahead renews Michelin solutions contract
UK transport company Go-Ahead will continue a 20-year relationship with Michelin after agreeing a three-year contract for the continued support of Michelin solutions’ Effitires comprehensive tyre management programme. The price-per-mile deal will cover 100 per cent of Go-Ahead’s expanding bus fleet – 4,800 vehicles – operating from more than 50 depots around the country. The Effitires contract offers a combination of outsourced tyre procurement and management solutions, helping keep Go-Ahead’s mix of single and double-decker buses on the road as they transport more than two million passengers daily.

While some manufacturers lobby for tyres to be replaced at 3 or even 4 mm, Michelin maintains that the current legal limit of 1.6 mm is “perfectly suited” to modern motoring and has reaffirmed its opposition to a change in the legislation. Indeed, during the course of the Paris Motor Show, Michelin’s top executives will be making this argument with journalists, OEMs and of course the public.

The new Grabber AT3 and X3 closer up
Following the launch of the new General Tire Grabber AT3 and X3 4x4 products, here’s some more of what Tyres & Accessories has learnt about the technology behind the tyres. Engineers have upgraded the Grabber AT3 by adopting a more aggressively off-road approach to what is - by definition - an all-terrain product. However, what’s interesting about this development is what particular tyre manufacturers mean by all-terrain. In recent years the proliferation of SUVs and especially crossover utility vehicles (CUV) in an increasingly legislatively demanding context has meant multi-purpose products have tended towards road-going performance. The AT3, on the other, has managed to meet and exceed all the road-going requirements, while adding some significant winter and off-road characteristics.

UK Sterling and euro tyre prices moving in opposite directions post-Brexit vote
While it was difficult to predict the outcome of June’s EU referendum, it is even harder to predict what the resulting Brexit vote means for the tyre business. Much of the discussion relating to the post-Brexit tyre market has focused on the legislative changes that may be coming. However, just over three months after the Brexit vote, the latest pricing data from market insight specialists Encircle Marketing appears to suggest that while UK sterling tyre prices are going up, exchange rate effects mean theses same UK prices are moving in the opposite direction when converted into euro equivalents.
