The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will begin its inquiry to investigate driverless vehicles and their future on UK roads on Tuesday 1 November. The committee will hear evidence from government officials and leading academic experts.

Euro Car Parts (ECP) has announced it will offer what it calls a “first-to-market” lifetime warranty on a wide range of mechanical parts. The initiative will provide repairers with an extra profit opportunity, with the warranty being purchased from ECP and then either sold on to the vehicle owner or used as a marketing tool to further improve their offer. The programme is one of a number of initiatives released this year by ECP in support of the independent repairer.

World’s oldest rally navigator teams up with 73 year old son
Dorothy Caldwell, who lives in Flagstaff, New Zealand, and is the Guinness World Record holder as the world’s oldest active rally navigator, is to take to the roads again in the New Zealand Haka Classic Rally, a 5,354 kilometre classic car competition on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The rally starts in Auckland on October 30th and heads to Wanaka before coming back to Auckland again, ending on 25th November. 98-year old Dorothy will be navigating for her son, Alastair Caldwell in his 1963 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III. The same team and car took part in the TransAm rally from New York to Alaska four years ago and Dorothy won the “Spirit of the Rally” award and her team came 5th overall.

A global survey from LeasePlan – one of the world’s largest vehicle management groups – reveals that nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of drivers admit to using their mobile phone behind the wheel, one-fifth (20 per cent) claim to send text messages and almost one-in-ten (9 per cent) admit to using social media. The Department for Transport (DfT) figures show that a driver impaired or distracted by their phone was a contributory factor in 492 accidents in Britain in 2014, including 21 that were fatal. Last month, the government announced tougher sanctions for motorists caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel, including automatically receiving six points on their licence instead of the current three and on-the-spot fines will be doubled from £100 to £200.
