FMI awards first bursary
The Fellowship of the Motor Industry (FMI) has awarded its first bursary to Andrew Gault, a body repair technician from Northern Ireland. In winning the Institute of the Motor Industry’s 2016 Outstanding Technical Achievement Award, Gault becomes the first recipient of a bursary scheme launched this year by the FMI to help students and apprentices in the motor industry through their studies.

While its latest US acquisition gives an indication of Conti’s future fleet strategy, the manufacturer has also been boosted by recent European endorsements. Scottish quarrying and supply company, Tillicoultry Quarries, implemented a Continental construction tyres only policy following several months of practical on-the-job testing. Speaking from its company’s Kincardine site in Fife, Craig Wilson, site & transport manager, said: “For a long time we had run a combination of remoulds and ‘budget’ tyres. We were experiencing significant downtime however, as well as the added costs of driver waiting, mechanic call outs and delayed deliveries, so we implemented a thorough review of our tyre policy. At about that time, our latest batch of Scanias came in with Continental construction tyres fitted, which allowed us to monitor those particularly closely.”

TyrePal has hired Steve Coffin – a telematics expert - as operations director. Before joining TyrePal, Coffin was marketing and operations director for MiX Telematics Europe. In this role, he was responsible for maintenance and sales to all existing clients and also handled marketing activity across Europe. He was part of the management team that established the company when it was divested from Siemens VDO Automotive and has been responsible for handling a 10-year contract with the Go-Ahead Group, a leading bus operator in the UK with 4,500 vehicles.

Motorcycle demand was static in October 2016, with 8,595 units registered – just 22 more bikes than in the same month in 2015. Drilling down, the shape of this demand changed, with naked and scooter categories up, and 51-125cc bikes registrations reduced. “Demand in the motorcycle market cooled in October recording a growth of just 0.3 per cent,” said Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.

More than 270 farmers have used the Flexelagri finance programme, launched in early 2013, which helps qualifying farmers and contractors from the UK purchase agricultural drive, materials handling and trailer tyres by spreading the cost over 24 monthly payments.
