Pirelli has named STS Tyre Pros Chester as Pirelli Performance Centre of the Year. The newly rebranded STS Tyre Pros in Chester (formerly Central Tyre) achieved a near perfect score in its assessment, Pirelli said, presenting the centre with the award for the second consecutive year. Pirelli awards one of its 116 Performance Centres with the title annually, determining a winner by conducting a video mystery shop at the 10 top performing PPCs, which is then scored by an independent assessor.

January proved a positive start to the year for new car registrations in the European Union, with the market growing 10.2 per cent year on year. A total of 1,170,220 cars were registered in the EU last month; among the major markets, Spain (+10.7%), France (+10.6%), Germany (+10.5%) and Italy (+10.1%) recorded very strong performances in January, while the UK passenger car market also grew, albeit at more modest rate, increasing 2.9 per cent year-on-year to 174,564 units.

McGill’s Buses has signed a five-year extension to its Michelin solutions tyre management programme. The fleet operator said Michelin solutions’ “fantastic support” was a key factor in its decision to renew. The Effitires contract covers the operator’s 400-plus single and double-decker buses, and will see Michelin solutions supply, fit and service the operator’s Michelin tyres.

In response, a spokesperson for the vehicle repair and fast-fit chain states that the Mail on Sunday article “focused on a small number of allegations with which we fundamentally disagree.”

Registrations of new heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) rose 5.3 per cent to 46,231 units in 2016, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This is the sector’s third consecutive year of growth. The year ended on a positive note, with 13,555 new HGVs registered in the fourth quarter – a 2.3 per cent improvement on the same period in 2015.
