Electric vehicle market set to charge ahead, says Frost & Sullivan
The electric vehicle (EV) market is booming. Approximately 25 new electric vehicle models are likely to be launched later this year with Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3 being the most anticipated. The availability of incentives and subsidies in the market, significant investment by original equipment manufacturers, new entrants, and lower battery prices are factors propelling double-digit growth. However, the lack of standardisation in charging technology, absence of a fixed business model, and short-distance range of EVs still need to be addressed.

Monthly new car registrations reach all-time high
The UK new car market grew by 8.4 per cent in March. A total of 562,337 new cars were registered during the month, an amount that, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), is the highest monthly figure since records began. Registrations reached new heights as buyers seized the chance to buy cars before the new vehicle excise duty (VED) rates came into force. Under the new system implemented on 1 April, all new cars (except for those with zero emissions) are subject to an annual flat rate charge.

Defective tyres: TyreSafe urges rejection of ‘four year’ MoT proposal
MoT failure rates due to tyre defects are, states TyreSafe, unacceptable. The safety organisation reports that data it requested from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reveals nearly 2.2 million cars failed the MoT in 2016 as a result of dangerous or illegal tyres, a figure that shows tyre defects to be behind 27 per cent of all car MoT failures. Of those, 106,000 failures involved cars taking their first MoT upon reaching three years of age. That equates to a five per cent failure rate due to tyre defects for all cars taking their first MoT. Overall, tyre defects are second only to lighting as the most common reason for MoT failure.

As we transition into spring, many think of new-born lambs and flowering bulbs as symbols of the new life of the year ahead. However, for accountants and many others working in the finance side of things, the beginning of April marks the end of the tax year. Along with the end of the tax year come a reasonably regular slew of motorist spending analyses. Two such surveys caught Tyres & Accessories’ eye because they offer insights into what the tyre-related “cost of ownership” is in practical terms.
