GMB demands cabinet secretary meeting after Bridgend JLR engine announcement
The production of Jaguar Land Rover engines at Bridgend’s Ford Engine plant will end three months earlier than expected in September 2020. The union for motor industry workers, GMB, says the news could see more than 1,100 jobs lost at Bridgend Ford alone, and has requested an urgent meeting with the cabinet secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates, to discuss how best safeguard jobs in the motor industry.

The latest figures from the Department for Transport in its annual Reported Road Casualties Great Britain report show the number of people killed or seriously injured in tyre-related incidents fell to 158 from 162. Slight injuries were also down meaning the total number of casualties was 876, its lowest level recorded. Following the welcome but slight decrease in casualties caused by tyre-related incidents in 2016, TyreSafe is urging drivers and stakeholders to continue their efforts, not become complacent. Indeed, Scottish figures were significantly worse than 12 months ago.

Earlier in the year, Tyres & Accessories visited the Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg, where the manufacturer focused on the current SUV and 4x4 segment. Growth in sales of these vehicles has been robust for a considerable period; Goodyear representatives cited IHS Automotive EMEA region figures that suggest sales of new SUVs are expected to exceed 6 million units in 2017, up from fewer than 4 million five years ago, with further growth projected to produce regional sales at 8 million new SUVs in 2022. The SUV/4x4 tyre market is, of course, following suit: in Europe (including Turkey), ETRMA Europool data projects sales of 18 million in 2017.

Hankook Tyre UK has extended its courtesy car scheme with the introduction of a larger fleet of branded Hyundai i10s offered to a selection of supportive dealers across its UK retail network. The scheme, set up in 2015, is designed to incentivise supportive dealers with 25 new 67-plate Hankook-liveried Hyundai i10s. The car was selected for its low running costs, and has been supplied to a selection of retailers around the UK over a two-and-a-half-year period as a courtesy car.
