Companies belonging to the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA) experienced a further decrease of replacement market tyre sales in all segments during the third quarter of 2017. This decline was particularly strong in the agricultural segment, where member sales were down 25 per cent year-on-year in the three months to 30 September 2017. The ETRMA comments that sales in agricultural segment confirm a negative trend already seen in 2016.

Kumho contracted market research institute GfK to look at all-season tyre sales in ten European countries; GfK found that four per cent of tyre buyers in the UK opted for all-season products.

Lincolnshire-based Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres Limited was been fined £300,000 on 15 September after a worker died when the fork lift truck he was driving overturned at the company Grantham headquarters three years earlier. Lincoln Crown Court heard the worker was transporting tyres on 30 July 2014 when the fork lift ran over a loose tyre in the road. He was crushed between the fork lift truck and the ground and later died from his injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Grouptyre has continued to invest in warehousing – overall it has 40 local/regional warehouses operated individually by its 10 regional members – and its e-commerce system, GroupLink, this year. The group reports a turnover of more than £310m, and collectively employs more than 1,200 people, of which 42 are business development managers; three regional sales managers cover the country. A nationwide fleet of more than 450 vans make, on average, deliveries to tyre retailers at least twice a day, with greater frequency and on-demand deliveries in some areas.
