Michelin: Restructuring, layoffs a possibility for Dundee tyre plant
It isn’t just retreaders who have suffered at the hands of cheap tyres imported from the Far East. In a statement issued today, Michelin confirms that its plant in Dundee “continues to face extremely challenging trading conditions, primarily due to the influx of cheap tyres from Asia and falling demand for premium tyres in smaller dimensions.”

Testing each tyre independently on the 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1M, Fast Bikes’ Mike Booth considered feel, stability and outright grip on each of the tyres tested.

Bridgestone buys ETB, Britannia Tyres
Bridgestone has bought all the shares of ETB. ETB – otherwise known as Exhaust Tyres Batteries and Britannia Tyres – runs 32 different locations, with 265 employees assisting more than 10,000 customers a month. The news follows the sale of Bridgestone’s Kingsway tyre retail business in the East England to Lodge Tyre in September 2017. More widely, Bridgestone has been behind a series of high-profile tyre retail acquisitions across the major European tyre markets. Both ETB and Britannia Tyres will continue operating under their current identities and with their current team, with founder Charles Ivill continuing to direct operations from the ETB company headquarters in Worcester.

Logistic service provider ATL officially opened ‘ATL Midlands Hub’ in Foston on 6 September 2018 to celebrate its recently built high-spec distribution centre and office facility. To commemorate the opening, the Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, officially opened the 35,000 pallet distribution centre and offices, in attendance of over 100 local dignitaries, suppliers and customers.

Soltyre’s Brechin branch has joined Michelin’s pan-European Exelagri network. Soltyre’s first centre in Dumfries previously gained Exelagri accreditation in 2013, and its new Brechin depot passed the 48-point Michelin audit months after opening in January of this year.

According to the two companies, ‘Super Cruise’ is the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology. Osram’s infrared and LED components, which are embedded in Joyson Safety Systems’ steering wheel for the Cadillac CT6, allow the system to monitor driver attentiveness by tracking his or her head position to ensure drivers are watching the road ahead while ‘Super Cruise’ is engaged.

The UK new car market enjoyed a boost in August, as year-on-year demand rose 23.1 per cent, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). 94,094 new cars were registered in the month as the market responded to regulatory changes, with cost-savvy buyers taking advantage of some compelling deals in what is always one of the year’s smallest months.

The event, which gained royal patronage in 1951 attracted more than 20,000 visitors and hosted over 156 exhibitors over the two-day show.

When it comes to protecting Britain’s wildlife, the work carried out by Wakefield District Badger Group, a part of the Badger Trust, is vital. The Group carries out surveys, talks, field tasks and is always on call to attend to injured badgers. All this work however requires transport, so when the Group’s Volkswagen Golf 1.4i failed its MOT due to a faulty exhaust, the Group contacted Klarius Products, the UK’s largest manufacturer of aftermarket exhausts, to help its conservation efforts get back on the road.
