Kwik Fit has announced the appointment of Mark Wellings as divisional director - mobile. Wellings rejoined Kwik Fit in August 2023, 26 years after his first role with the company. He began his career with Kwik Fit in 1997 as a mobile tyre fitting technician before moving into supervisory and managerial roles within the mobile division, so in some ways his appointment as head of Kwik Fit’s mobile operations see Wellings come full-circle back to his roots.

Transaid exceeds second phase of driver training goals in Uganda
International development organisation Transaid has concluded phase two of its Professional Driver Training project in Uganda, with 890 predominantly HGV drivers being trained over a two-year period – exceeding the project’s original training goal by more than 15 per cent. Delivered in partnership with local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Safe Way Right Way, the project set out to improve the standards of driver training in a country which suffers one of Africa’s worst road traffic incident rates, claiming an estimated 12,000 lives a year.

Analysts at Deloitte have called on the government to increase efforts to support the transition to electric vehicles, after sales of EVs “plateaued’ at the end of 2023. Sounding a note of caution after otherwise positive figures for new car sales, Deloitte said the UK would need to incentivise battery electric vehicles in order to meet the 22 per cent market share target, while access to sufficient public chargepoints remains a concern. Jamie Hamilton, automotive partner and head of electric vehicles at Deloitte, said: “While consumers have continued to purchase new cars in what’s been a strong year of growth for the industry, sales of electric vehicles (EV) have been positive but started to plateau towards the end of the year.

Glyn Cainey, Dexel Tyre’s first truck division director, dies
Glyn Cainey, a UK industry veteran who had a career spanning nearly half a century with South Yorkshire’s Dexel Tyre, passed away at home last Friday morning in his chair next to his wife, as had been his wish. He had been unwell for the past few years since his retirement on 4 November 2020. Having joined Dexel as a car tyre fitter, he helped the company grow its commercial tyre operations, eventually leading the division. Glyn is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and grandchildren. A loving father and husband, Dexel told Tyres & Accessories that he will be sorely missed.

Pathway for zero emission vehicle transition by 2035 becomes law
The UK government’s zero emissions pathway became law 3 January 2024. Technology and Decarbonisation Minister Anthony Browne visited a new bp pulse hub in London to mark the occasion. The zero emission vehicle mandate (ZEV) mandate sets out the percentage of new zero emission cars and vans manufacturers will be required to produce each year up to 2030. 80 per cent of new cars and 70 per cent of new vans sold in Great Britain will now be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100 per cent by 2035.
