Building the road safety coalition – TyreSafe Annual Briefing 2024
TyreSafe named its 2024 award winners at its annual briefing on 13 June, highlighting its expanded road safety stakeholder connections. In its first in-person briefing since appointing Stuart Lovatt as chair, TyreSafe presented its updated plan to change UK attitudes towards tyre safety. The event detailed Octobers Tyre Safety Month, featuring superhero-themed characters promoting the ACT (Air Pressure, Condition, Tread) checklist, and showcased a dynamic calendar aligning with partners such as the National Police Chiefs Council.

The July report from Startline Used Car Tracker says that six out of 10 people (61 per cent) think that the UK should impose tariffs on Chinese electric car makers following similar moves by the US and EU. The report shows that 43 per cent believe we need to protect existing UK car manufacturers, 21 per cent that Chinese car makers are subsidised by their government and their pricing is unfair, and 12 per cent that we should impose a tariff that levels the market.

In short, the well-known automotive retail business reports that sales were up, but pre-tax profits were down amidst ‘major restructuring of tyre supply chain’ in 2024, which is a reference to the sale of the Viking International business to Bond International during the period.

Bond International has completed the acquisition of Easityre Ltd and Fife Autocentre Ltd. Bond recently announced it had acquired a 200,000 square foot warehouse in Bathgate, Scotland, and coupled with these acquisitions the company reports that it will give the Pocklington-based business “a dominant share of the wholesale tyre market in Scotland”. Scott Meechan of Easityre will join Bond and will assume the role of managing director for Scotland. Brian Meechan will also remain in the business to give his support and expertise in all areas of the combined tyre business north of the border.

Kraiburg TPE has opened a UK subsidiary. The thermoplastic elastomers company says this strategic move shows its commitment to “serving the important UK market directly,” from which it will enhance service to local customers. Kraiburg TPE cites the UK as a long-term “pivotal market”. It is opening a subsidiary because “evolving dynamics presented challenges in maintaining optimal service standards since 2020.” The new company will collaborate with its longstanding partner, Abbey Polymers. In January 2024, Kraiburg TPE UK initiated its business and warehousing operations, including a dedicated sales office in Stafford and a strategically located warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent.
