UK roads the second safest roads in Europe, will road repair investment match increased commuting?
Only Sweden has safer roads than the UK, according to figures unveiled by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) that cover Europe. In light of this, Sheffield-based Roadmender Asphalt commissioned nationally representative research that has explored commuter habits post-lockdown, showing that 69 per cent of Brits would rather cycle or drive in to work now than take public transport due to the COVID-19 risk, amounting to 24,261,000 people. Further to this, the study has unveiled that 65 per cent of Brits would not feel comfortable commuting to work via public transport anymore and think it will be one of the most stressful parts of their day.

‘Tiny percentage of damage claims’ on Michelin products
In the 12 months ending 30 June 2020, Michelin received just 769 eligible claims for damage under its free accidental damage guarantee for regional commercial tyres. Nearly 120,000 entitled truck and bus tyres were sold in the UK and Ireland during this period, meaning a claim rate of 0.65 per cent. Michelin says the rate highlights its product quality, and demonstrates its products’ safety, performance and uptime benefits. The manufacturer claims to be the first to introduce such a guarantee. The programme now covers the majority of its regional and on/off-road ranges when specified as either original equipment or as a replacement.

Norwegian startup chooses UK for first tyre recycling plant
Norwegian tyre recycling startup, Wastefront AS has confirmed that its first plant will be located in the UK. It plans to invest between £20-30 million on the recycling facility, with its construction resulting in employment for around 100. When fully up and running, Wastefront adds the plant will employ between 20 and 30 people full time. The company, founded in 2019 in Oslo, is now deciding where to locate its first site. The company tells Tyres & Accessories that its plant will be the first to combine conventional technology with Wastefront’s own proprietary technology, which will minimise the environmental impact typically associated with traditional tyre pyrolysis. It adds that this will “make the UK plant the ‘greenest’ of its kind.”

MOTs worth £177 million a year in UK tyre sales
Together, the increased utilisation of independent contractors on the supply side and record online search figures on the demand side show that MOT testing is booming. Considering that MOTs were put on hold for roughly four-and-a-half months between March and August (let’s not even mention the Northern Ireland MOT crisis), this is good news. Word of a coming MOT spike will be warmly welcomed by the tyre and aftermarket associations that lobbied government for the end of the MOT extension on both road safety and economic grounds. But what exactly does the apparent boom look like? And why does it matter to the tyre trade?
