Obituary – David Edwards (1944 – 2021)
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of David Edwards on 15th May. David suffered a fall at home and passed away after a short spell in hospital. The Edwards family was well-known in the UK tyre business in the 1960s and the four brothers – John, Mike, Dennis and David – built up a successful group of 10 tyre depots in and around East Anglia, which they eventually sold to Dunlop in 1961.

Stone Tyres in St Helens has submitted plans to St Helens Council regarding the expansion of his growing tyre retail business. Despite the adversity of the last 12 months, Stone Tyres has continued to grow – especially the firm’s Gorilla Tyres mobile tyre-fitting sister business. However, the latest expansion plans refer to bricks and mortar business and specifically to the construction of an MOT centre next to the Stone Tyres premises.

Wardle-based Boughey Distribution has specified the fitment of Michelin X Multi Energy tyres to all new vehicles joining its fleet, thus maintaining its policy of 100 per cent Michelin fitment across all axles. Boughey will be taking delivery of 127 new Volvo FH 460 6x2 tractor units with Globetrotter XL cabs over the next two years, all shod with 315/70 R22.5 Michelin X Multi Energy drive tyres.

Renault ZOE sets new hypermiling record on Enso tyres
Swapping its OE tyres for Enso-branded rubber meant a Mission Motorsport-backed Renault Zoe was able to drive 475.4 miles (764.9 km) on a single charge recently. According to the team, the Enso tyre fitment lead to almost 12 per cent more mileage than a separate Zoe with OE tyres fitted as standard. The successful hypermiling record attempt took place at the Thruxton circuit in Hampshire, UK on 10 June 2021.

Vehicle SORN numbers up 9% during pandemic
Kwik Fit has taken a look at data published by the government and notes that the pandemic was responsible for an additional quarter of a million cars being taken off UK roads. The automotive servicing and repair company reached this conclusion after comparing the number of vehicles officially off road with a registered SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) in the last quarter of 2020 with figures for the final quarter of 2019.
