Investors in People has awarded Lodge Tyre Company Ltd with its investors in people gold accreditation. Gold accreditation means the company has the policies in place and that everyone – from the directors to apprentices – takes ownership for them taking place. Only 17 per cent of accredited organisations achieve the gold standard.

Volvo Car UK is offering a free repair service covering both windscreen and tyre damage. Volvo reports that the service is the first of its kind in the UK car industry to cover both tyres and windscreens. Where “viable”, Volvo retailers will the service on Volvo cars “of any age” and work will be carried out by “qualified Volvo technicians”.

From the initial design and development work to casing recycling and tread application on the factory floor, Bandvulc implements measures designed to ensure its tyres perform across a range of applications. This is supported by the ongoing knowledge and expertise sharing partnership between Bandvulc and its parent company, Continental Tyres. Ahead of the Budget the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer urging the Government to cut fuel duty to reduce the burden of soaring energy costs and fuel prices on consumers and businesses. In its letter, the PRA explains that rapid increase in the wholesale price of petrol and diesel have had to be passed on to the motorist. The association explains; “Our members have done what they can to alleviate the increases, but the speed at which prices have moved has been unprecedented and has left many forecourt operators with negative fuel margins”.

At the end of January, Wastefront AS received permission to press on with plans to construct the ‘UK’s greenest tyre recycling plant’ at the Port of Sunderland. Construction on the development is expected to begin this year (2022), with company executives confident that the plant will be in commercial operation by 2024, creating around 100 skilled jobs.

A campaign group made up of anonymous climate change activists reports that it has deflated the tyres of hundreds of SUVs across more than 13 locations in the UK. The group, which calls itself “The Tyre Extinguishers” claims that it “disarmed” SUVs in Chelsea, Chiswick, Harley Street, Hampstead Heath, Notting Hill, Belgravia, Clapham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Sheffield, Liverpool and Edinburgh on the evening of 7 March 2022. However, it is less clear whether they considered the safety and indeed environment implications of such vehicles driving on underinflated tyres.

According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), UK new car registrations rose by 15.0 per cent in February as 58,994 new cars joined Britain’s roads. This rise of 7,682 units was in comparison with the same month in 2021, when the pandemic shut car showrooms across the UK – registrations are down 25.9 per cent on pre-pandemic levels, as vehicle supply remains constrained by semiconductor shortages.

Bridgestone has appointed David Almazán as its new commercial business unit director for Bridgestone in the North Region. He fills the role vacated by Greg Ward, who left Bridgestone in January to become Halfords Autocentres commercial sales director. Almazán first joined Bridgestone in April 2016. He moves to the UK from Madrid, where he served as the company’s commercial business unit director for the South West Region, encompassing Spain and Portugal. He previously worked for MAN Trucks & Bus, initially as controlling manager and subsequently as trucks sales director for Spain. He will report to Andrea Manenti, Bridgestone’s North Region vice president, and will take responsibility for developing and executing Bridgestone’s commercial business strategy within the UK and Ireland.
