Royal Mail trialling Enso Tyres on electric vans
Royal Mail is embarking on six- to nine-month trial of Enso Tyres’ electric van-orientated tyres. The trial, a partnership between Royal Mail, Transport for London (TfL) and Enso, aims to make “Electric Vehicles (EVs) even cleaner to further improve air quality”, according to the stakeholders. According, to Tyres & Accessoriess 2021 survey of public tyre fleets, Royal Mail is the second-largest fleet in the UK.

TyreSafe: EV tyres are ‘significantly different’
TyreSafe is advising owners of electric vehicles (EVs) to “pay close attention to the tyres they choose when the originals need replacing” because “increasingly, the tyres fitted are specifically designed for use on EVs and can be significantly different to the ‘normal’ tyres…”. Specifically, TyreSafe is warning EV owners that fitting the wrong type of tyre could result in “loss of range, extra noise, accelerated wear and the risk of failing while being driven, which could result in a serious incident”.

TyreServe fleet tyre sales pass 100,000
A new feature designed to help make fleet tyre payments through TyreServe easier was launched in July - at the same time as the epyx service passes the milestone of 100,000 total tyre sales. The Outsourcing feature is designed for instances when major fleets that buy fixed cost tyre insurance from a tyre management company find that a tyre need has arisen during a routine garage visit by one of their vehicles.

TyreSafe calls for submissions ahead of refreshed 2021 online awards
TyreSafe has revised the categories and refreshed judging criteria for its 2021 Awards. Two changes stand out. Firstly, there are fewer categories this year, which could mean competition will be more intense. And secondly, TyreSafe will not be holding a face-to-face Award ceremony for the second year running this year. However, winners will have the opportunity to celebrate via a social media activity and video submissions are also eligible this year.

Bicester garage Grip Tyres joins First Stop network
One of Bicester’s oldest and most popular tyre centres has become the latest independent garage to join the First Stop network. The Victoria Road garage is benefitting from new signage, marketing and social media support, and a broader range of premium tyres already in place. It has also added an MOT station and the latest vehicle diagnostic equipment, worth thousands of pounds. Grip Tyres has provided tyre services to the town’s motorists for around 27 years. First Stop said its popularity in the community was a compelling factor behind the network’s initial approach.

Halved in 5 years: Q2 bus & coach registrations
The UK new bus and coach market grew by 231.1 per cent in the second quarter after a near standstill in 2020, reports the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). But although all vehicle types saw double- and even triple-digit increases on 2020, the market remains subdued.

Post-Covid boost for HGV market in Q2 2021, but full recovery still to come
New heavy goods vehicle (HGV) registrations increased by 128.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2021, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The increase saw some 9,493 units registered, up from 5,342 in Covid-impacted 2020. Compared to the pre-pandemic five-year average, however, truck registrations fell 20.1 per cent, as nationwide lockdown and business uncertainty continued to discourage greater investment in new equipment.

Continental: MOT extension impact could last a decade
Continental Tyres is predicting “huge rises” in demand for MOTs this autumn, as more than five million additional tests are due for annual renewal in the second half of 2021. This huge increase in demand comes as millions of tests postponed in 2020, due to Covid-19, come up for renewal from September 2021 onwards, putting pressure on workshops to meet this additional demand. As well as the short-term strain on the UK aftermarket, the creation of a new ‘MOT season’ from September to December is likely to have a more profound long-term impact on the market.

MOT test numbers up 45 per cent in 2Q 2021
The latest MOT test data released by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) shows that test volumes recovered strongly between April and June of this year, in stark contrast with the disruption caused by last year’s MOT extension. The DVSA data, obtained by BookMyGarage.com through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, shows 45 per cent more MOTs took place in the second quarter of 2021 than in the second quarter 2020. However, test numbers were still down 32 per cent compared to the same period in 2019.

Kerr’s Tyres buys Auto Bann
At the start of August, Kerr’s Tyres Group, announced it had completed the purchase of Auto Bann. The acquisition of Auto Bann, one of Portadown’s most respected independent garages, means Auto Bann becomes the 13th Kerr’s Tyres & Auto location in Northern Ireland and the first in Portadown. Having entered Tyres & Accessories top 25 UK tyre retailer ranking in May 2021 when the company had 12 branches, the addition of Auto Bann means the chain’s current total of 13 is one step closer to 24th position, which is currently occupied by Elite Garages, with 14 branches.

Kwik Fit teams up with SAS star to provide Staycation motoring advice
With forecasters predicting an improvement in the weather, and possibly even a heatwave in late August, many of those yet to begin their UK staycation will be looking forward to setting off for family time away. However, a study conducted on behalf of Kwik Fit shows that most drivers are not making the necessary checks to ensure their journey is trouble free. It reveals that only 32 per cent of drivers setting off on a family holiday adjusts their tyre pressure to allow for the extra weight of a full load. To combat avoidable safety and efficiency issues, Kwik Fit has recruited SAS star Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham.
