Retreading at former Bridgestone plant
The future of tyre making at the site of Bridgestone’s recently-closed Béthune plant in France has been secured by a deal signed in July between major European vehicle maintenance and mobility firm Mobivia and French retreading specialist Black Star. With support from Bridgestone, the partners are gearing up to retread car, SUV and light commercial vehicle tyres in Béthune – products that Bridgestone intends to sell through selected retail outlets. The project will commence in January and gradually ramp up; Mobivia’s communications manager, Laurie Lalloyer, informs us that the aim is to retread 900,000 tyres a year by 2025. By that time the project is expected to have created nearly 200 jobs, including employment for many former Bridgestone workers.

Llanelli-based Tuf Treads was founded in 1979 on a different location to where the retreading facility can now be found. Back then, current owner Mike Rees joined William Lloyd in the establishment of a new venture focusing on retreading tyres in four sizes according to the Peters system. Much more recently, the firm’s current Cross Hands retreading factory took delivery of a new Marangoni nail-hole detector to upgrade its quality control procedure, something that is just the latest in a history of steady development at the company. UK tyre retreader Vaculug has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. The pledge means that greenhouse gases produced by Vaculug will be balanced by the amount removed from the atmosphere. The company says it recognises the importance of becoming a sustainable company and is committed to achieving net zero by changing the way it operates. The company notes that it is “the first tyre retreader” to make this pledge.

NTAW gains Michelin retreading capability via Black Rubber acquisition
Australian tyre wholesaler National Tyre & Wheel Limited (NTAW) has signed the necessary paperwork for its acquisition of Black Rubber Pty Ltd and Black Rubber Sydney Pty Limited. The transaction, which took place yesterday and is valued at AU$26.3 million (£14.5 million), brings Black Rubber’s import and retreading businesses into the NTAW fold.

Michelin sustainability award entry ‘head and shoulders above rest’ – NTDA
Michelin’s successful entry for the Tyre Industry Environment and Sustainable Solution Award 2021 “stood head and shoulders above the rest in terms of corporate ambition, vision and practical commercial initiatives across the whole field of tyre recycling, materials reuse and wider environmental campaigns,” according to the judging panel, NTDA chief executive Stefan Hay commented. The tyre manufacturer’s entry for the award highlighted its aim to create greater value at all stages within the circular economy.

Insa Turbo to become Kraiburg-approved Recom retread manufacturer by 2022
Leading Spanish retreader Insa Turbo, which is part of the Soledad Group, has signed a collaboration agreement with Kraiburg Austria that leads to the use of Kraiburg retreading materials at the retreader’s Aspe (Alicante) factory. According to an Insa Turbo statement, the alliance includes a roadmap which “defines the gradual implementation of Austrian technology in the process of hot retreading and pre-curing of truck tyres.”

Vipal Europe now responsible for North Africa & Middle East markets
Vipal Rubber has restructured the commercial coverage area of several key regional subsidiaries, and as a result, its European branch office is now serving important markets in North Africa, such as Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, as well as main business partners in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The retreading materials and tyre repair specialist made this change to capitalised on the branch’s closer geographic proximity and similar time zone, and thus greater ease in carrying out technical, after-sales and training visits.

Hexpol completed the 48 million euro acquisition of 100 per cent of Unión de Industrias C.A., S.A. (Unica) from Espiga Capital, a Spanish based Private Equity firm on 7 July 2021. Unicas turnover in 2020 amounted to 40 million euros, with a profitability “below Hexpol Group”, according to the business’s new owner. Unica will be consolidated into Hexpol from 1 July.

In its latest Annual Report, India’s GRP Ltd. shared that the 2020-21 financial year “proved to be a watershed year in more ways than one” for the Marangoni GRP retreading joint venture. While the world and India were under the grip of COVID-19 for the best part of the 12-month period to 31 March 2021, the company says Marangoni GRP “made rapid strides in several directions” that “set it on a path of high growth and expansion in the next year.”
