Michelin helps Olleco go green
Olleco is the renewables arm of ABP Food Group, and provides the food and hospitality sectors with a range of services designed to help them to tackle the climate emergency by converting their waste resources into renewable energy. The company employs over 1,000 people, at 19 sites strategically located throughout the UK and Ireland, and has grown to become the UK’s leading supplier of premium cooking oils and fats as well as its largest collector of used cooking oil and food waste. The company has signed a new Effitires contract with Michelin’s Services and Solutions division; the agreement between the two businesses was secured on a joint commitment to sustainability, and a cleaner and greener future for the transport sector.

Black Star, the car tyre retreading operation owned that took over the ex-Bridgestone Bethune new tyre factory, has launched its new range of retreaded car tyres called “Leonard”. Blackstar is run by iWip, the Mobivia subsidiary dedicated to the circular economy. Mobivia also owns the ATU autocentre chain in Germany as well as the Norauto garage business in France amongst other enterprises.

Retread supplier Kraiburg Austria navigated choppy 2022 waters successfully to achieve 92 million euro in sales, a figure the company called “satisfactory” and a demonstration of its crisis resistance according to managing director Stefan Mayrhofer. The company registered growth in high-performance compounds for hot cured retreads alongside stable mould cure figures, while developing its business in key Central and Eastern European markets. New Kraiburg products in 2022 included the local public transport focussed K708, the Nordic winter K727 tread, and the 3PMSF-certified K738, which was operational on construction sites and public roads from September. Kraiburg Austria also bolstered its sustainability credentials via its membership of the Global Platform for Sustainable Rubber.

Bandvulc’s Ivybridge retreading plant is now a Continental LifeCycle facility. While continuing to design, engineer and manufacture Bandvulc-branded retread tyres, the site will align more closely with Continental’s existing LifeCycle plant in Stöcken, Germany. Bandvulc stresses that the plant’s new LifeCycle status won’t impact upon job security for its workforce, confirming that there are “no redundancies taking place as a result of the Continental rebranding.”

In recent years, authorities in many regions of China have put waste tyre recycling on their agenda. Recycling waste tyres is a reusable resource that aligns with China’s current green and sustainable development policy and can bring profits to tyre companies. Tyrepress China notes that ZC Rubber, Linglong, Doublestar and other tyre manufacturers have begun to lay out their plans in this industry. For example, in December 2022, Linglong Anhui Manufacturing Base announced that it was preparing to launch a project to recycle 30,000 tons of waste tyres annually and its feasibility study provides numerous insights into the development of the wider Chinese tyre recycling business.

Continental has designed a new service for European truck tyre dealers – the ContiCasingAccount. In short, the system enables dealers to deposit used casings into an account and receive a credit for them. According to the company, the new service has already been successfully tested by 28 dealers in Germany. The program will be now rolled out to all interested European tyre dealers. However, Tyres & Accessories understands that the service won’t operate in the UK where a different system is in place.
